Garlic in a tube? As little as a year ago you never would have convinced me to cook with this Gourmet Garden Garlic Spice Blend.
Now, y’all, I love to cook with garlic (and I love eating garlic even better). I get that from my Daddy’s side of the family. My Mamaw claimed that garlic would “clean out your system.” I’m not quite sure what she meant by that, but I’m all for eating something that is “medicinal” and tastes delicious at the same time.In folk medicine, garlic has been praised for all kinds of cures for centuries. It supposedly could cure the common cold … or even the plague, so if you are worried about swine flu, I suspect you should eat a lot of garlic. Some folks said it would cure acne (and I’ll tell you that no one in my family ever had it). Modern researchers have discovered that garlic has benefits as a natural anti-inflammatory, anti=fungal, anti=viral, anti-oxidant. Eating it will lower your cholesterol, aid blood circulation, and even help repel mosquitoes!
Garlic seems to be “against” everything. Why, as you well know from watching television all these years, garlic is also anti-vampiral! I guess you have to wear garlic around your neck to keep the vampires away, but that would also drive away all humans. It’s probably better to eat it, instead. Garlic breath is a pretty good repellent, too. It’s how I keep the first row of the kindergarten audiences at bay.
I’ve always enjoyed cooking with fresh garlic (sometimes grown in my own garden), and mincing the cloves with the garlic mincer that belonged to my Mamaw. Using it brings back memories of the delicious meals she once cooked, and of that delightful woman. However, garlic makes my hands stink for days after.
[Note: You now have an urge to tell me of a sure fire way to get rid of the garlic smell, don't you? Go ahead and share, but I can't use anything that is astringent on my dry hands. Just spelling the word "astringent" makes my hands start to crack. CrrrrrrACK! See there?]
Although I had seen that tube of garlic in the Kroger produce section, I never fell for it until a few days ago. The craving for a pot roast that was flavored with garlic was upon me, but I was also feeling lazy. I just wanted to be able to cook something with no fuss. I already use Gourmet Garden’s Ginger to make stir fries for my husband (and have found it to be delicious), so I decided that I would give the garlic a whirl.
I marinated my roast in olive oil, the garlic blend, and a bit of cracked pepper before I cooked it. OH. MY. THUNDER! I took one bite of that roast and started moaning like Meg Ryan’s character when she was sitting in Katz’s deli in the movie When Harry Met Sally. My husband said, “I’ll have what she’s having!” He moaned, too and we were not faking it!
Maybe y’all have found another garlic blend that is good? Nobody is paying me for this, so I’m not sold on that brand. I am sold on enjoying the taste of garlic without having the smell on my hands, though. And, since no one else is going to do the cooking around here, I’ll keep a tube of garlic in the refrigerator.

Can you wear some gloves while working with the garlic? They make nice non latex gloves now days(-: Just a thought since I am into the real stuff.. fresh… instead of from a bottle, but… whatever cranks your spring and makes it easier on you is good too(-:
I could wear glove, and I do, but this stuff isn’t too bad at all. In fact, I like it quite well. Fresh is better of course, but there you go.
We have a saying in our family…What makes everything taste better? Garlic!
I haven’t seen tubeogarlic yet, but have used the tubeobasil, will have to keep my eyes peeled for it. I can just smell the endless garlic toast.
Well, at my house, BACON makes everything taste better
Hey, smear the bacon with garlic? I tried this stuff on toast today, and like it! Oh, it makes the house smell so good!
Does your garden have parsley? Chew it to get rid of garlic breath. Rub it between your palms to remove garlic oils and then was normally should cut most of garlic smell from hands. It is natures little deoderizer. Now I’ve got another place in California for you. If you haven’t been to Gilroy, you haven’t had garlic.
Can I interest you in a garlic cookie? http://gilroygarlicfestival.com/

Umm. I’d rather have a bacon brownie, please. But, yes I have parsley. I’ve chewed it before but never tried rubbing it on my hands.
Gilroy? Never heard of such.
We are big garlic fans. Haven’t tried the tubeogarlic. I’ll have to give it a whirl. I love anything that saves time.

Honestly, I was afraid I wouldn’t like it, but it was REALLY good. I’m gonna try it on garlic bread today.
I tried some garlic powder, but I don´t like it. I preffer fresh ones.
Hugs!
I’m with you that fresh is better. But, this stuff is better than garlic powder, Lola. I don’t know if they sell it in Spain, though. Hope you are well!

I’m not sure garlic-in-a-tube has reached the shores of The Land Down Under And Off To The Side (aka: New Zealand) but I will keep an eye out for it if it is as good as you say.
By the way, Fairweather Lewis sends her wishes that you reach your food pantry donation goal.
You don’t seem so ornery to me! It’s very good (and would be in a refrigerated case) and it’s easy…which is always a plus.
Glad Fair sent you my way!
Reading Jamie’s comment brought back some good memories. I used to drive fairly frequently on US101 between San Luis Obispo and the East Bay, and I could always tell when I was getting near Gilroy — from the smell! And usually I’d have the radio tuned to THE BEST FM STATION EVER which broadcast from Gilroy — KFAT. They were only on the air eight years between 1975 and 1983, but they still have a cult following that shares off-air tapes. I remember particularly the station’s news department called itself “The Garlic Press…”
I should have known that my Sweet Spousal Unit (S.S.U.) would have known where Gilroy was located. After all, you are a California boy. The Garlic Press … *snicker*. I still love your sense of humor … but how come you can’t surf?
The water is WAY too cold in Northern California to surf! (That doesn’t stop some of the hardier souls, though, who wear wet-suits to indulge their passion for the sport.) I can, however, play a pretty mean version of “Wipeout” on guitar — that’s as close as I’ll likely get!
You can play MANY things on the guitar. You are my favorite guitarist in the whole wide world.
You just can’t use too much garlic. Or Onions. I cooked at a county jail/detension center for 12 years, feeding 180 inmates and staff. I cooked from scratch and received lots of notes from the inmates and jailors on my cooking. However, the complaints were there also. And you know what it was…. Too much fresh garlic and onions. I retired from there but… I miss it so much. Can you tell?
What I would do after peeling and pressing and getting it on my hands (it took several heads of garlic for some of my recipes, ja ja ja!) I would wet my hands and then pour salt on them, rubbing them together. Then I’d rinse and dry them well. The next step was to pour a dab of Olive oil in my palm and rub it in to avoid dryness. Simple but effective for me.
I’m SO glad you met your goal. I was happy to assist in my meager way. If you could/would keep me in the loop on your next ‘food drive’, I’ll see what I can do. It was an honor for me to be able to tell others of your project. GREAT JOB, Shelly!!!
(My friends were from all over: Helina from Finland, Ira from Isreal, Kate from England and a lot of others from outside USA.)
Take care!
Crazy Judyth
I appreciate YOU Judyth, and I don’t think you are too crazy
I’m afraid that the salt might be too much for my hands. I had a chemical burn last year that really affected them. I kinda like the suggestion about parsley that Jamie gave. Or mint … would mint work, I wonder?
