Now It’s Time For A Trip To The Food Bank

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on December 13, 2009

Many thanks to all of you who left “comments for cans!” I have felt some “good energy” coming from you the last few days. Now, I’m excited about a trip to the Tarrant Area Food Bank tomorrow to donate 125 cans.

As I wandered through the grocery aisles gathering those cans for the food bank, I tried to keep in mind that some of it might go to homeless folks. They might not have a can opener, or a heating source. I looked for some pop top cans. Here’s what I got with that in mind:

  • 6 packages of the three, 3oz. cans, of tuna.
  • 12 of the Chunky Soups (18.8 oz.).
  • 4 18 oz. jars of peanut butter.
  • 2 cans of Sloppy Joe filling.
  • 3 cans of ravioli.
  • 7 large cans of pears.
  • 2 can of fruit cocktail
  • 9 cans of peaches

I didn’t focus on “holiday foods,” but on things people might use any day of the week. I also got:

  • 6 bags of rice (1 lb. each)
  • 6 boxes of spaghetti (1 lb each)
  • 6 cans of spaghetti sauce (26.5 oz.)
  • 2 cans of chicken (12.5 oz.)
  • 2 cans of tuna (12 oz.)
  • 1 can of chili
  • 2 cans of salmon
  • 4 packages of elbow macaroni (1 lb. each)
  • 4 packages of dried beans
  • 4 macaroni & cheese dinners
  • 2 cans of tomatoes (28 oz.)
  • 5 cans of tomatoes (14.5 oz.)
  • 4 cans of peas
  • 7 cans of green beans
  • 6 cans of corn
  • 16 assorted cans of beans
  • 2 cans of beef broth
  • 1 can of chicken broth

These cans and a twenty dollar donation should help a little bit. I realize that the Food Bank could have done much more with money, but I needed the thrill of holding the cans. Maybe I can pass along some of your good energy through them.

You’re a gem Shelly. A lot of people are going to be thanking their guardian angel when they sit with full bellies this week.

Unfortunately, my donation was a drop in the bucket, darlin’. But, maybe some other folks will get inspired to donate. That will be the key, eh?

Last Saturday, I made a visit to the orchard with my Grand children. Mark, the owner, asked me if I was headed back into town. I told him I was and he asked me to deliver the 30 bags of apples that he sends to the Food Shelf every week. I told him it would be no problem.
Last Wednesday, it stormed like crazy, the orchard was closed and his donation wasn’t picked up. Honestly, the roads were unsafe to drive out in the country.
When I got to the Food Shelf, the Grandkids helped me unload the apples. I talked with the manager and told him I wanted to make a donation and asked him what would be best.
In our town, her reiterated the need for laundry soap and paper goods. I told him about the cans. He really liked that idea. He told me to get cases of vegetables and soup, mostly, and “just anything” so he could keep the shelves full like in a real grocery store.
I’m on it today.
Thanks Shelly.

I had no idea that you could still harvest apples this time of year. You are a good soul, Joe. When I talked to the folks at MY foodbank, they were talking about the dire need for donations of any kind. Donations are down, and demand is up. It’s pretty sad.

You know you would have donated anyway, because you are just that kind of person
