A Different Side of “House”

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on January 1, 2010

When I watch British comedy, I get the same feeling I have when I eat Fritos dipped in applesauce. I know that it’s odd, and that there’s something “wrong” about liking it, but I do like it and I just can’t explain it. It is an acquired taste. If you are British, please pretend I never said that about your sense of humor … especially because I want to recommend some British comedy for Only The Good Friday.

Yep, I’m going to continue trying to avoid any negative posts on Fridays, and you can join me, if you like. I haven’t spread my “optimism virus” very far on the internet, but at least it “took” with me. I’ve discovered that since I have been looking for only positive things to say on Fridays, that I am less negative on other days of the week. It sounds sappy (even to me) but whatever works.

hugh_laurie_2Do any of y’all watch the television drama called “House?” If so, when Hugh Laurie’s name comes to mind you might think: brooding, grouchy, acerbic. He’s a brilliant actor, and I never would have known that he was British (I don’t hear his accent slipping through).

At least, I wouldn’t have known but for the fact that my husband has eclectic tastes (which is only one of the reasons I keep him around). He knew of Hugh Laurie from a British comedy series called “A Bit of Fry & Laurie,” which also stars the immensely talented actor/comedian Stephen Fry.

You can find that series on Netflix, or possibly at your local library (that’s where we found it). You might want to give it a try, because you could find that it is good for a chuckle. Y’all know you want a reason to laugh, because laughter is good for you in many ways. Not only will it improve your mood, it will improve your sense of well-being and it burns calories! I’m not joking. If you laugh for 10-15 minutes, you’ll burn anywhere from 10-40 calories. Don’t take that as an excuse to go grab a candy bar … you would need to go laugh for an hour to burn off the calories. It still beats walking on a treadmill!

So, maybe rent all of the seasons of “A Bit of Fry & Laurie?” But, remember that I said it is an acquired taste. It might, or might not, “blow your dress up.” Try watching it while you snack on Fritos and applesauce. You might discover that you like both of them … but you won’t know if you don’t try it.

So tell me, do you have any “Netflix picks?” I’d love to know of other movies to rent, because we never have any ideas for movies to put in the queue. Tell me a good movie (or anything else that is good in your world). Then, go enjoy your day. The first in the New Year (and new decade). May the days be filled with only the good!

Yahoo Happy New Year!
I don’t watch House that often but I have seen it a few times!
Didn’t know he was British either. Interesting things you find out!!!
My son and husband like Monty Python. They will laugh for hours watching those.
We don’t have net flix so I can’t help you out there. Although we did just watch the first season of Dexter. Yikes that was crazy violent. Interesting though if you like crime shows like CSI etc.
Have a great day today! I am going to do some cooking, finish up a crafting project and maybe a nap(-: Woo Hoo(-:

I haven’t watched Dexter… how did I miss that? I’m a huge Monty Python fan, too. If I keep eating Fritos and applesause — I’ll be even more huge! Hope your New Year is fabulous! Nap sounds good right about now…

Hugh Laurie was also on another British comedy “The Black Adder” if I remember correctly. I enjoy “Are You Being Served?” and the one with Mrs. Bucket but can’t remember the name. As for movies, I always enjoy “Ladyhawke”, “The Princess Bride” and classics like the old Road movies with Bob Hope. I also like the old Charlie Chan movies. We used to watch those as a double feature with a Shirley Temple movie on Sunday afternoons when I was younger. Almost anything from the late ’80s makes me nostalgic!

My goodness, Elizabeth … were we separated at birth? You can suggest movies to me any day. We seem to have the same tastes!

One of our best netflix movies was Tell No One- A French suspense movie. It was great!
Unfortunately, we don’t get to watch a lot movies this time of year due to sports, but at least this is the end of college football this week!

Oh, I’ll look for that one. Were you supposed to tell me about Tell No One? Bwahaha. I feel for you, but I can’t reach you about the sports business. Thank goodness we are not sports fans. That can really eat up your time … but if you love it, then go for it. It’s just not my cup of tea.

We share a love of British television. Fortunately I get BBC America so get quite a few. If you haven’t seen Rosemary and Thyme on PBS, that is a good mystery series featuring two lady landscape gardeners.
You know I’m a Doctor Who and Torchwood addict. The BBC series Viva Blackpool is fun. Unlike the American knockoff Viva Laughlin, somehow it works better in REAL English. The same thing happened with Coupling. It worked with a British cast and even with the same scripts flopped in American … it is something about the timing in the humor. On the other hand The Office is as funny in English as it is in American.

“Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak? Their accents could drive you close to tears. Sometimes the language completely disappears. In America they haven’t spoken it in years.”

I know how addicted you are to Doctor Who … I don’t get BBC, but on PBS there are occasional shows. I’ve tried to figure out when they might show Doctor Who just so I would know what you are talking about  . I’ll bet it’s on Netflix, and I’ll put it in the queue.

If you like Hugh Laurie and British comedies in general, you need to rush to your Netflix account and rent all the “Jeeves and Wooster” episodes from the early nineties. Hugh Laurie plays the passionately stupid, aristocratic bachelor, Bertie Wooster. The imperturbable Jeeves is played by Stephen Fry. They are perfect together. The series is based on the stories of P.G. Wodehouse, and I can sit and laugh just thinking back over them.

Ahhh. I love Jeeves & Wooster. I didn’t mention it, because I thought it might be too esoteric for most folks. It definitely is an acquired taste if you are unfamiliar with British comedy, but it’s hilarious. I didn’t think that Stephen Fry would be appropriate for Jeeves, because he seemed to young for the part. But, he defined the role, as far as I’m concerned. Wodehouse rocks. Thanks for bringing it up.

I also first saw Hugh Laurie in the Jeeves and Wooster series, and later in the Blackadder series. I love British comedy. My favorite is Blackadder (favorite enough that I named my cat after the title character) but another one I love is called As Time Goes By, which starred Dame Judi Dench back before she was a Dame. They still show that on our local PBS station. PS Happy New Year!

I have never seen the Blackadder series, so I’m gonna have to get it next. If you like it well enough to name a cat after it, then it must be good. I know As Time Goes By … and I love Dame Judi.

Oops, Firefox just ate my comment.

Thank you for mentioning that comedy, I don’t know that one and we both love Hugh Laurie and British comedy, just got away from it a bit. Have to join Netflix now, thank you very much. : )

Happy New Year!

You don’t have to join Netflix, if you have a public library. They possibly have the series or could get it on inter-library loan. You’d love it, I think.

As I was writing my post this morning -which I hadn’t originally planned as anything other than just a post -I thought, gee this could work as something for the Only The Good Friday thing -which I haven’t done in some time so I went in and picked up the picture I like to use with my Only the Good posts, zapped it in there and then, before publishing it, linked it back to your blog for Only The Good posts! Who cares if it does sound or maybe seem a bit sappy to some about trying to see the good, or the brightness to things that on the surface don’t appear that way -I’m with you on thinking it does help to erase a little bit of the negativity -at least for a little while much of the time, sometimes it works for even longer periods of time too!
Happy New Year Shelley and may all your days have lots and lots of “Only The Good” things in them! Peace.

I love House!! We just got Netflix about 3 weeks ago, so I will add this show to my queue and let you know how I like it. How could I not if Hugh Laurie is in it? Not sure about the Fritos and Applesauce, though. Not too big a fan of either one individually but for you I’ll give it a try.

We just watched Thirteen Days about the Cuban Missile Crisis and The Kennedys on Netflix. I really enjoyed it!
