A Hand-some Bowl

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on January 12, 2010

My beloved husband knows how to worm his way into my heart. Since he is aware that I collect “hands,” he got me the perfect gift: A handy bowl.

Actually, “handy” is stretching it a bit. It isn’t for use in serving food, it’s just decorative. But, oh! How decorative it is!

Now, I have to figure out what to put inside of it! I thought about fruit … but I’d have to buy much more fruit than Mr. Tucker and I would ever eat. Rotten fruit in the bowl wouldn’t be too beautiful, would it?

I briefly considered putting balls of colorful yarn into this bowl, but then I remembered that I have five cats. That will never do.

I even thought about taking apart an antique world globe to put into it. I thought that might look cool, but my spouse persuaded me not to destroy the globe for the sake of aesthetics. I went along with him, because the globe is brown … and I want a blue one if I’m going to put it into this bowl.

Any thoughts? It’s too pretty to sit around empty. If you are jealous of this, you can purchase a handy bowl, too. Don’t I wish they would pay me to tell you that? I just want you to be happy.

Do what?

Why do I collect hands?

I have always been fascinated by people’s hands, because they tell you things about the person that you might not otherwise see at first glance. By the callouses upon them, you can tell if the person does hard labor or if they play the guitar (or if they do no work whatsoever). I notice whether a person has a manicure or if their nails are dirty and unkempt. Arthritic knots sometimes explain to me why people might seem grumpy.

And, hands often reveal a person’s true age! One look at my hands, and my face (and dyed hair) would never be able to fool you into thinking that I am younger than I am!

Hands are the second thing I notice about a person when I meet them. The first thing I see are the eyes. Other people might look at the smile first, but I figure that you can fake a smile — you can’t fake a twinkle in the eyes. And the lines around the eyes can tell you if that person smiles often!

But, I decided to collect hands, because collecting eyeballs is too weird, even for me!

Now, I’ve told you that I collect hands … what do you collect? And, why?

If so, I think you should put THIS into your bowl…. of if that’s too much, perhaps just get ‘em to add to your collection!!!

OMG! those soaps are adorable!! Wicked woman, you are causing me to be a consumer. Excuse me, I have to go order these.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker January 12, 2010 at 10:36 am

Oh, and …thank youuu!

Allison January 12, 2010 at 10:49 am

I’m sorry; I couldn’t help thinking of you as soon as you said you collected hands! I believe the artisan responsible for those lovely soaps must be from Brooklyn, because we have a local shop that carries them. They are terrific in person. Very small and dainty (actual size of dolls’ hands), and I love how she captured them in all different ‘people colors.’ So fab!

In terms of my own collection…. I have collected hippopotami since I was in kindergarden, and have amassed a HUGE collection. I also have some multimedia collections — things related to Marilyn Monroe and Elvis include DVDs, books, art. Sealife and squids are another active collection. I have a huge collection of Pez dispensers that I am not really adding to at the moment. (I used to get every Pez dispenser there was, but now I only get one if it is truly special or stands out in some way.) I am running out of space, though, so I really must curtail my collecting!

Well, they are awesome … and I knew you collected squids, so I was going to ask you about it. I didn’t know about the hippopotami and Elvis (very eclectic indeed! You are a gal after my own heart.

And, I perfectly understand about running out of room!! Gets where you almost need a museum, doesn’t it?

I collect Owls. It started with a fascination for mythology and my favorite goddess Athena whose emblem was the Owl. They are not terribly intelligent birds but have gotten a reputation for wisdom which may be the story of my life. :-)

And a pair of elderly mairried hands just for you.

Well, I knew you collected owls, but I didn’t know why. I also didn’t know they weren’t smart! The elderly hands are a lovely picture, but I’m afraid I already have a set of elderly hands…attached to the end of my arms

What a great bowl. As for what to put in it…lady fingers, of course!

Bwahaha! Excellent.

I don’t really collect anything, but that bowl is awesome!!! The soaps are fantastic-the other thing I was thinking were those different colored glass/beads or rocks or whatever they are. That would look cool, too!

Again, beads or rocks are cat toys! Gotta watch ‘em closer than you do toddlers.

The bowl is great! What an interesting collection.

I have several collections – “Good Shepard” prints, anything turkey, bird nests, shawls and hymnals are just a few.

I always say I am the easiest person to buy for….just find something unique to add to my collections.

You sound like me … if I get one of something, then I have to get two so I can start a collection! Bird’s nests are interesting. Do you go out and gather the real deal?

Marcia January 15, 2010 at 10:39 pm

I love the bowl, and I can’t stand any body part or part of a body in art…. But the way this bowl is made they don’t look disembodied, so I can look at it. It’s really quite nice. Fill it with light?

I just collect my thoughts, I suppose… but once had a collection of musical instruments going, got a tad bit expensive.

It is filled with light … but my Calico cat also decided it was a good nesting place. Every time I turn around I find her curled into it.

Oh thank you for posting that link! My mom collects hands too, and I bought her this bowl for Christmas several years ago. Unfortunately, despite not being filled with yarn, her cats knocked it down and broke it. Couldn’t figure out where to get another one (I purchased it at an outlet store), but now I can!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 6, 2010 at 6:36 am

I’m glad it helps, Sarah! Dadgum cats will do that. Nothing is sacred to them. Hope you are able to replace it. Now, I thought I was probably the only person on earth who collected hands! I better look harder so she doesn’t beat me to them all :-)

I’d love to have one of those bowls. I bought one for my daughter a couple of years ago and now I really want one but can’t find one.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker September 27, 2010 at 6:01 am

I gave the link in the article, Pam. It’s at this website.

I’d love to have one of those bowls. Do you know where I could get one?
