Some of you know that on this blog I only post good things on Friday. By that, I mean “not negative.” As I told you in the beginning if we look for the good, we are likely to find it. Some days it is harder to find good than on others, but it is necessary for (at least for me) to try to see it. I figure, “Seek and ye shall find.”
These last few weeks have been especially hard for me, because I have battled a lingering cold, exhaustion, and a certain ennui. In the rainy weather, all I have wanted to do is sleep! I’ve wanted to retreat from the world. I have also been experiencing a curious craving for Hostess Twinkies, HoHos, and Ding Dongs! Especially after I saw this image of a wedding cake on the internet. I confess I really wasn’t seeking this:
I’d credit the original source, but can’t track it down (it’s on several sites), so if the image is yours — and you are willing to admit it — I apologize. I’d also like to ask you what nightmare you were having when you dreamed up this tasteless concoction? I know that the bride and groom were able to save a piece of cake to eat on their 1st wedding anniversary, because those Hostess Cakes have enough preservatives to last longer than the marriage probably will. I’m just sayin’.
I digressed.
The reason I was craving those nasty cakes, I think, is that they are carbohydrates … supposedly. The ennui, the feeling tired, social withdrawal, and craving carbohydrates (during the dark days of winter) can all be symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder —S.A.D. The good news is that I recognize that I have it and can battle the depression (and that horrible urge to eat HoHos). If you suspect that you suffer from it, see a doctor! The best news is that it usually reverses itself when the sun peeps out again.
I’m told that the sun might come out today!
In Haiti, however, it might start raining, which is bad news for the people living in “tent cities.” For most of them, their “tent” is a blanket or sheet draped over scrap wood. But, I’ve got good news about that:
The best news I can tell you today is an update on my post called Gimme Shelter. On that post, I told y’all that Colorado Bob was trying to raise £490 to buy a Shelter Box to send to Haiti that would house as many as 10 people. My friends, Bob has raised £46,301.43!! ATTABOY!
That will buy NINETY TWO shelter boxes which could house 920 people!! Do you want to donate? It’s very easy to do. Just go to Bob’s site at Just Giving to make a secure on-line donation.
As for me, I’m going to go sit on the porch and seek the sun. I’m also going to stop thinking about Hostess cupcakes! Although, I used to believe that if I ate enough of them the preservatives would keep me looking younger. My sincerest apologies if that image above made you drool, bless your heart. I hope your day is filled with only the good!

And, I liked your OTGF post! Have fun at the ball. As for the cake…yeah … ummm. Bwahaha.
Well, it is cute! I don’t think I’ve eaten buy a few of those things in my life, I never liked them; lucky me!
I’m so excited about the shelter donations!
My OTG Friday post suggestion may help you overcome SAD, at least temporarily… but no time to write it until later today!
No Ho-Hos or whatever you call that stuff!

The shelter donations are totally cool. I don’t know where they are all coming from, but I think that a big name blogger must have picked up on it. Colorado Bob is a pretty great guy.
And, avoid HoHos! They don’t taste that great & they are NOT good for you!
Oh dear
Only the Good Fridays ~ i love it!…my post might make it
Howdy stranger! I missed you soooooo much!

Your post IS about good! And, I’m so proud of you for following your dreams.
Hello! my first on this!
I think I can do without the cake, no matter how fetching it looks. I better load up on rice to get more carbo than those sugared sweets that do more harm than good. I acknowledge that winter makes me S.A.D. too, and I just made a poem out of that just this day here. So I guess that’s SAD, right? what do i know, this is my first winter ever (came from a tropical country Philippines)! Alas, this ‘Good Fridays’ makes you thankful in spite of. thanks!

You picked a great winter to come to the US! Are you freezing your toes off?
I agree with you, on much. Yes, the cake is too horrific for words. And, yes, I too have suffered from depression, although I can’t lay blame at the sun’s doorstep. I’ve found some things that help: Pretend to be happy. Works sometimes. Look for humor wherever I can find it. Works often. At least I can enjoy a laugh despite feeling like crap. I subscribe to ComedySmack http://www.comedysmack.com/date/2010/2/5/commercial-appeal and open it first thing every morning to wake up with a laugh. Some are lame, but at least they’re trying. The third thing is cooking, which I’ve gotten back to after a long time away. It truly soothes the rumpled soul. Baking a good cake or roasting a turkey is therapy you can share with others without revealing a thing.

I agree that laughter is a big help. I work at it. It’s why I haven’t written much this week … I didn’t want the bad mood to show through.
As for that cake, I’ve been thinking. Maybe I was too critical? After all, I am the woman who hangs a rubber chicken in her kitchen and a gas mask in the bathroom. Who am I to judge taste?

I must admit I love the look of the junk food cake (so funny, so childish), although my mind immediately goes to the logistical problems of serving the thing. Gray weather makes me crave the worst of junk food. the junkier the better. The only thing that keeps me away from the HoHos is knowing that they will make me feel crappy later. Maybe I’l toddle off to the kitchen and make a really good cake.

Why not try making your hand at making some home made ketchup? You can tailor it to your tastes and it freezes beautifully. When you’re feeling down, listen to your favorite music while making something you’ve never made before (or couldn’t imagine making) and then share it with a friend. Any missteps along the way is just a reason to laugh at the experience. Cheers in thew New Year!

I’ll admit it’s funny, but the mere thought of it makes me gag
Gray weather makes me crave carbs of any kind … but thankfully I don’t have HoHos on hand.
Oh, and the ketchup? though I love your recipe, Joy … I’m probably too lazy to make it. You can send me some, though…
Shelly,
I guess I am at the point in my weight loss that the cake doesn’t look appealing. Man, I grew up on on that stuff and loved the pink snowballs the best!
Here is a video that someone sent to me on Thursday which started my day off with a smile! It’s a bud light commercial and it’s the expression on the females that makes it funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W05DwasfDQY
My son’s improv group did their Thursday night show as a fund raiser in the biggest room in the student center and they got 400 in the audience to raise over $1000 for Haiti. I wish he had told us early enough for us to go and watch. But it was great to hear it in his voice how happy they were to have great turn out for a good cause and used the energy from the audience.
Enjoy the sun! We’ve the got the front door open with the sun streaming through and a couple of very content cats lying in the rays.

Yay for your son! Whoopee for your weight loss, too! I’m so proud of you for tackling the diet. I wish I had you hear to encourage me.
When last checked we were up to 94 Shelter Boxes and trying for 100 through the weekend. Somehow housing 1000 people seems like a nice round number. Colorado Bob hit the art market yesterday to drum up some more Lubbock money.

There’s money in Lubbock?
Here’s a theory: Michael Pollan advocates eating only what you make, so anything that you make is good to eat. If you like French fries (and who doesn’t?), make some at home. You know how to do that. And make the ketchup to go with, justifying the whole project. You’ll get the carbs, which you’re craving on these dark, winter days, but leave behind all of the chemicals, hfcs, salt (well maybe some of the salt) and additives. So you’ll probably feel pretty good. In the name of research, why not give it a try? I dare ya!

Just saw this on ComedySmack and remembered your post from a while back. Go to http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/ for an entire website of train wrecks suitably called CakeWrecks. If it doesn’t make you sick to your stomach it will make you laugh. The Twinkie extravaganza, above, pales in comparison.
That site is hilarious!!!
