Hey you North Texas kids! Get out of bed quick. It’s time to build a snowman! Make a snow angel. Have a snowball fight or make an igloo. Boys, you can … ummm …. “write your name” in the snow (sorry, girls, it’s a guy thing — you aren’t properly equipped). Make snow ice cream (thank you Paula Deen) … but do it before the boys write their names. “Yellow snow” ice cream would not be delicious.
Those kids in Denton aren’t listening to me. They are sleeping, because there is no school today. By the time they get up, this winter wonderland will be melting away. That’s a shame, because it’s a sight they will rarely see in Texas.
I know that some of you up North don’t consider 10 inches of snow a large amount and that you are sick and darned tired of snow. In fact, our legislators in Washington are waiting for the snow to end, so they can get back to their debates about “global warming!” But you must realize that it “doesn’t snow much” in Texas. For most of us, this is a delightful “event.” Heck, we drive all the way to Colorado so we can show our children what snow looks like.
Yesterday we received a record snowfall for the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Only twice, since the weather service has recorded it, has this much snow fallen on any given day here. In fact, most winters we don’t get this much snow for the whole season. The good news is that it will probably be in the 50s by tomorrow, so all of this will be gone.
By the time I took that picture in the wee hours of the morning, several inches of snow had already melted. In fact, as I sat listening to snow whisper down yesterday, I watched it melt as it fell.
This is only the good Friday, so (by my own rules) I have to be optimistic about it all. I figure that I have enough firewood to last another day or two, canned goods, coffee, and cat litter … so my world is good enough. I don’t have to venture out, so I can enjoy the spectacle.
My yard looks better with a dusting of snow … not saying much, is it?
If you look hard at the picture, you can see the tracks left by the animals at night. We don’t have pets outside, so those are the marks of the wild critters. I guess that my first task this morning is to put out some food and fresh water.
Because the schools are closed, there should be less drivers on the road, which means less accidents. For those who do have to travel in this mess, I wish you well. Please drive slowly and carefully.
And, if you are in an area where businesses are closing, remember that services like Meals On Wheels (which delivers food to the elderly) is closed, too. If you have an elderly neighbor, you might want to check on them.
On the way to check, throw at least one snowball. C’mon, you know you want to do it.
Y’all stay warm and have a day filled with only the good.

I’d rather have the snow
LOVE IT! You have more snow there than what we have had this month in NH, Enjoy! We are getting the house sided and I thought the guy was nuts to want to do it in the winter, but we lucked out!

Girl it was more than we get in two years. At a High School in the Dallas area, the kids were so excited that they started a snowball fight. Administrators called the police when more than 200 kids got involved & got out of hand
. Snow makes us Texans crazy.
…er. I meant “crazier.”
hello…i love snow although i would prefer it not cold if there’s one. your snaps are a beauty – snow still amazes me but the cold leaves me grrr.
you’re in dallas? we’re here in houston. i agree, snow is seldom in texas – it’s a luck to just even see a speck of it – a wish my son had since we came here – and i guess he was heard because it snowed once – dec 4 to be exact and we had a ball. the thickest snow we saw was in arizona last december and back in january in amarillo on our way back here in houston.
i guess the nicest part of having snow here in our area is that we don’t have to plow it – it melts on its own. hehehe happy friday!

Oh, Abby, I was driving through your fair city in the midst of that December 4th blizzard! At least your son got to see some snow. It won’t happen often unless you take him to Arizona (though it does happen often in the Amarillo area). Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
NYC got about a foot of snow, but freezing temperatures will keep it around for a while. We’ve had a few snowfalls already this season where it disappears within 24 hours. It’s nice because it falls & is white and then it just goes away without hanging around collecting the grime of the city. So don’t lament the fast fade, just that much less you have to move out of the way. So quick it’s almost a dream. Stay in w/some hot cocoa or homemade popcorn and enjoy the wonder of it all.

I’m all for that fast fade business. Here in Texas, that’s pretty much what we get. Must come see your recipe for popcorn …
Well Hell’s Bells! You really did get a snowfall. Too bad it doesn’t last long on your streets and sidewalks, (and everywhere else, especially those big 20 foot high mounds in grocery store parking lots). And yes, Shelly, I plowed snow for a living, a couple of times. I’ll go on to tell you that I drove a snowplow in a Nike commercial some years ago. I’ll send you the YouTube, and I worked on a cute movie about a ten year high school reunion where the guys turned out to be snowplow drivers. It is called, “Beautiful Girls”.
The only time I had my name “written” in the snow was when I was at my girlfriends’s house. She got in trouble. Her dad recognized her handwriting!
Enjoy the snow. There is a certain beauty in it all.
Peace to all.

I loved your snowplow video
You just liked having cute girls chasing your snowplow.
Ummm. I don’t want to know more about your name written in the snow
My kids would go crazy for that. We would have to drive for hours to show them snow (3 + all the extra hours for the traffic jams and stuck cars of the snow-tourists) – and they’re “grew up in the northeast US not at all impressed” parents aren’t exactly jumping at the bit to go.
Poor deprived children

Deprived children? Nahh. They would rather play computer games, anyway!
