It’s happening this weekend: The 25th Annual Texas Storytelling Festival! And, it’s right here in Denton, Texas from March 11-14, 2010.
It hardly seems possible that it was twenty-five years ago, when a friend of mine had a dream. Finley Stewart, about whom I have posted before, wanted to bring together storytellers and story listeners for a grand celebration of the art of story. With a handful of volunteers, that is exactly what that twenty-three year old whippersnapper did … AND, he formed a statewide storytelling association the very same year. It’s the Tejas Storytelling Association. How’s that for achieving a dream?
The first festival was at the Denton Visual Arts Center, but with enthusiastic supporters, it quickly grew. Not many years later, visitors saw blue and white tents sprawled across the fields beside the campus of Texas Women’s University. Over the last few years, it has moved indoors (mostly to the Denton Civic Center) because of capricious Texas weather.
This year, there will be twenty-five featured tellers! Whew! We have all been featured on the stage in the past. Yes, I am one of them … from 2000, I think … but, I’m a very minor player! I am allowed to share a ghost story Thursday night and will tell at a concert on Saturday. I feel guilty that I didn’t tell you about it before, but the association didn’t ask me to do so, and … well, I’ve been pre-occupied with family matters.
It’s late notice, but if you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, you might consider a trip to Denton to hear some darned fine storytelling. You can view the Tejas site to download a PDF file with the full schedule and information about the Tejas Storytelling Festival.
Hope you get a chance to drop in for a visit! As my Daddy would say, “Y’all come!”

It will be delightful. But, you have a large festival in Houston, if you really want to hear some storytelling
I’ll get you more info, if you want it.
Dang, Shel, that sounds like fun! Knock ‘em dead–(oops. Since you’re telling a ghost story that’s a bit over the top, no?
)

You could say, “Bite your tongue.” It’s kin to “Break a leg,” but for storytellers instead of actors.
Ouch–
Wonder what you tell wimpy storytellers who tell their tales strictly on puter (cause they have terminal stage fright???)
