Wedding Bells Will Be Ringing

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 18, 2010

Do you hear us all abuzz at our house? We couldn’t be more tickled. Our boy is getting married.

Ian and Angela

Technically, Ian is my husband’s oldest son. Although I am just the “wicked stepmother,” he feels like one of mine. Click that picture above to see a larger view of this beautiful couple. Aren’t they adorable? He has found the most perfect young lady to marry. She’s beautiful, smart, and funny (just like he is) and she writes thank you notes! How can you not love that?

Their nuptials are scheduled for August 7th, 2010. They will be married in Mendocino California at his Grandaddy’s house, with all the family gathered around and then make their home in Portland, Oregon. It should be a wonderful celebration. Here is the view the wedding party will have from my father-in-law’s yard.

I am honored that they asked me to read from Kahlil Gibran during the ceremony. Since you won’t be there, let me post for you the verses they want me to read.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other’s cup, but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous,
but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping;
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together yet not too near together;
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.
~Kahlil Gibran

Isn’t that beautiful? “I’m a little verklempt, talk amongst yourselves.”

Wonderful news, congratulations to the happy couple and to the proud dad and to the not at all wicked stepmother! What a gorgeous spot they’ve chosen, too, I love Mendecino.

I’m lucky that my in-laws live there so I have an excuse to visit and a bed when I get there :-)

Best wishes to them!!! (I LOVE that pic of the beach off Mendocino. My mom was born in CA–and we have pictures of the beach at Morro Bay[where they have a legend about a mermaid]–that were taken nearly seventy years ago. Needless to say, Morro Bay’s on my bucket list.)

I wanna know about the mermaid. It probably doesn’t swim as far as Mendocino :-)

Congrats! Looks like a beautiful location, and they look like a beautiful couple.

Oh what a sweet post. Congrats to the happy couple. And the wedding venue looks amazing. Who doesnt love weddings?

Shelly Kneupper Tucker March 19, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Thank you, Lilly. That yard of my father-in-law is indeed amazing. I’m thinking I shouldn’t wear makeup, though … because my mascara will run. I’m already crying. But, it’s good crying. :wink:

Oh yay! What a beautiful reading that is. I’d not heard that before. I love it. :)

And OMG am I jealous of his granddaddy’s house…. OMG OMG OMG So so envious. Two things…the ocean and Mendocino and that’s in his back yard? Is his granddaddy single??

Just kiddin’. heh

And I LOVED the reference to SNL’s Mike Myers doing Linda Richman on “Coffee Talk” …. that is hilarious! I always loved that skit. “Talk amonst yourselves” with that little dismissive wave of the hand… ROFL

Bwahaha! 1st: no, Grandaddy is not single (just to get that out of the way). Yes, that’s the view they see when they sip their coffee in the morning … it is magnificent. It’s funny that their house is quite small and was extremely expensive when they bought it (they thought at the time). But, no one can ever build in front of them to block their view. They have about the best view in Mendocino, so the price of the house went through the roof! They would never sell, of course.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting the SNL reference! I never know if people catch those little bits I toss into the mix. I was afraid people just thought I was being rude :wink:

“She’s beautiful, smart, and funny (just like he is) and she writes thank you notes”? You must feel as though you’ve died and gone to heaven. What a lovely verse you get to recite; should be required reading for all marrieds-to-be.

Even if you lean towards a “wicked stepmother” on some days, resolve to be an emotionally accessible mother-in-law. The fondness shown your daughter-in-law is a reflection of the love and respect you have for your stepson. I just know you will, and won’t worry that you’ll ever threaten with that chainsaw of yours.

I would never come after the kids with a chainsaw! But, that fence wood out back is another matter. It will be quite easy to be emotionally accessible to this child, though the distance will make it difficult. And, isn’t it a lovely verse!

I am beaming. I just hope I don’t start crying and screw up the reading :-)
