The Best Thing About A Carnival

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 19, 2010

Do you ever have a carnival come to town and set up on the parking lot of the mall? I don’t remember them from when I was a kid, because I think my parents didn’t drive near them. They didn’t want their four urchins begging to stop and ride the ferris wheel! Heck, we got to go to Six Flags Over Texas once each year and The State Fair. Those ought to be enough fun for any kid.

For Only The Good Friday, I wanted to share some pictures of the carnival that has been in Denton this week.

You can click them to see them a bit larger if you would like. Wanna know the best “good” about this carnival? I didn’t have to ride any of the rides! I could just wander through and snap pictures while I watched children giggle and parents grimace.

The Starship looked out of this world. When it got spinning, I was thrilled that I was outside of it!

I almost wanted to ride the swing, but then saw how fast it whirled and tilted!

The carousel might have been my speed, if I hadn’t seen this monkey. What were they thinking? I’m gonna have nightmares!

Ahhh! The teacups. Those I could have handled.

And, there is something for everyone at the carnival. Everyone’s a winner on this. Pick a duck and the number on the bottom tells you what cheap crap … sorry, I forgot I was only talking about good … I meant what delightful toy you win as a prize.

And, what’s a carnival without funnel cakes? I only experienced them vicariously, but this gentleman was kind enough to let me take a picture.

Oh, sure I have tons more pictures, but I don’t want to wear you out. You tell me something good. Or, tell me about a fun carnival experience you had. Or, just say, “hey.” As always, if you are posting for Only The Good, please sign the Mr. Linky so I know where to find you.

I hope your weekend is filled with fun and frolic!

We had a carnival here last week (just two blocks from my house, too – great, until you have to explain to the kids that no, they can’t go every night even though they can see all those cool twirly lights). About a tenth the size of the one you showed and * horror of horrors * no funnel cake! Israelis have never even heard of funnel cake. All ours had was popcorn and cotton candy. Not a sausage roll in sight.

Oh, when they can see the carnival from their own home that must be difficult to control! I don’t envy you that. I don’t envy no funnel cake, either! OMG! Funnel cake and corny dogs are required!

Funnel Cakes – I treat myself every other year or so at some event – like Maryland Sheep and Wool. I haven’t had to go to a carnival in about 5 years. The boys are old enough to take themselves and I get to avoid the crowds and the noise and the Funnel Cakes! :)

On a weeknight here there wasn’t a big crowd. I liked just getting to try photographing in the dark. Why in Thunder would you avoid funnel cakes, girl? After bacon they are the best thing.

Looks like a fun place! I need to head over to Rodeo Austin before it’s too late; I need a corn dog fix. And Shelly, those are nice photos!

Okay, this is next part is blatant promotion on my part, but I think it’s a good thing, in the spirit of ‘Only the Good Friday’. I’m sponsoring a caption contest on my blog. The winning entry gets a free 8×10 enlargement of any photo on my gallery website gallery website. Click on the blog link to view the photo, read the post, think of a clever caption, and leave a comment containing your winning entry.

Thank you, Van. Nothing like your photos, though. I’m so jealous of your ability that I could spit…but that wouldn’t be ladylike and Lord knows I’m a lady. I wouldn’t let just anybody come in here with promo, but I like you, so it’s ok. I tweeted your post and am wracking my brain for a suitable caption for your photo. Boy, I’d take one of your photos in a heartbeat!

yummm….funnel cakes…drool! We never got to do the parking lot carnivals because my parents thought they were all death traps.

Bwahaha! Your parents were right … But those funnel cakes make me wish I had a deep fat fryer. Dang this healthy eating.

Thanks, Bob. I’ll tell folks about it again and see if we can rustle up the last that you need. When Haiti isn’t on the news anymore, folks forget … but the need doesn’t go away! You have done such a terrific thing, you big-hearted man.
