The Dog Ate It

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 26, 2010

Those were the words of the little boy who turned in this book at the school library where I worked this week: “The dog ate it.”

chewed book

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Well, OK, you are right. I laughed. Then the librarian told me that he was the first person to check out this book, and there was a line of children who were waiting to check it out. Bless their hearts! Whatever will they do?

Even worse was that she told me that the little boy’s sister had turned in a book in the exact same condition earlier this year! The dog ate that one, too!

I guess you have to admire a dog who likes books? Or was he being a critic?

Y’all chew on this awhile and see if you can come up with a pun to go with the picture. Surely someone has something.

Well, obviously the dog needed more fiber in his diet. Groan….

Aaargh! I’m choking on that one
[secretly that is just the kind of silliness I seek ... don't tell anybody.]

ooops that is gonna cost someone(-:
My dog doesn’t like books(-:
Sad that they turned in the book like that. I hope they could pay for it so a new one could be bought for the school.

I’m sure the kid paid for it … but the library has to order a new one while all those little urchins wait. At least he didn’t eat a set of encyclopedias.

I actually had a dog that ate several library books when she was a puppy. I mean TOTALLY ate them, with just a tiny bit of cover left to let me know what happen.

the librarians thought it was funny, but since I had to pay for the books, it was rather expensive.

Wonder why a dog would want to eat a book? I’ve got cats that chew cords, and I can’t figure that one out either!

Another one.

Kibbles and books, kibbles and books!

Bwahaha! I’d give you a prize for that … if I had one. Funny. You and my husband should get together. The puns would fly.

Hee! We have a much loved, now elderly Beagle who was rescued from “down the country” about six years ago. Along about that time, a reporter named Emily Yoffe was writing about her experiences with rescued Beagles in a wonderful book called “What the Dog Did.” We met Emily at a Beaglefest, purchased a copy of her book, and she kindly inscribed it to Spencer. Fast forward about a year, and we found ourselves fostering a cute little Beagle gal named Dawn. She was young and got into everything, including the lower bookcase. She pretty much devoured “What the Dog Did,” and I don’t mean to say that she read it avidly. I’ve always laughed that she picked the most appropriate book in the house. It’s still readable, and we treasure it. Dawn has gone on to her forever family, so we have a little souvenir of her stay with us.

Fun story! How delightful that Dawn chose that particular book for her culinary adventures.
And, I love Beagles! The first dog I can remember that we had was a Beagle, and he had such a great personality. He didn’t eat books though,

Because of hard economic times, looks like the family has had to confine their dining out to fast food joints and they’re no longer bringing back doggie bags for the pooch.

Ouch! But, I’m thinking the books are more expensive than a doggie bag!

That is one “Dog Gone Book”

My cats think books are a form of scratching post. I’ve had to leave the bottom shelves on the bookcases empty.

That would have been a perfect title! Where were you when I needed it?

Van Sutherland March 28, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Okay, these are from my wife:

#1 – My dog is chewing up books at the 12th grade level!

#2 – Careful, your dog could get a bad case of bookworms.

Sorry, we just can’t help ourselves!

Bookworms! Bwahaha! Your wife is as funny as you are! Y’all are making me snort coffee on the computer screen. Keep it up, I have a towel.
