A-Hunting We Will Go

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on March 28, 2010

Not for Easter eggs…nope. And we are not going hunting with a gun. We are going ghost hunting! That’s right. It’s how we plan to celebrate our anniversary this year. My husband thinks I use the terms “we” and “celebrate” a bit loosely … but he is indulging me. Bless his heart, he always does.

I hadn’t planned it for our anniversary, but we I wanted to stay in one of the most haunted bed and breakfast inns in North Texas. I thought it would be best to stay during the week, so it would be less rowdy (because I imagine ghosts don’t come out when the revelers do). The dates we could get just happened to fall on our anniversary.

Though I don’t know if we will have a paranormal experience, we will have a good time. Perhaps not a terribly romantic time … I mean, how romantic does it get if you think “someone” is watching?

I will be armed with both digital cameras and my ghost radar application for my iPhone (no, I’m not sure that it is “for real,” but it will add to my excitement). I’m also working with my Flip video camera to learn a little bit about it before we go. I will put it on a tripod and leave it running for awhile. Don’t expect a YouTube video unless I capture something really exciting.

I won’t play it if it only has “dialogue” like you find on that Ghost Hunters show on television. Have y’all ever watched that show, or am I the only doofus who does? I’m embarrassed to admit that my husband and even the cats hide the remote control from me now. I’ll watch Ghost Hunters all day long if I can find it on a channel.

But, at least I know I’m being silly. Those shows take themselves so seriously! The whole time that those ghost hunting shows are on the screen, I mock the “dialogue.” It’s the same three sentences over and over:

  • Dude, did you hear that?”
  • “Whoah! No *bleeep* ing way!”
  • “What the *bleep* was that?”

I can do better than that! I’ll tell you a story. You can sit in a darkened room with only the glow of your computer monitor while I try to send shivers up your spine.

If you like ghost stories, hang on until later this month. I’ll tell you the stories behind this bed and breakfast inn, and let you know if we saw (or heard) any ghosts at all.

If you have ghost hunting “tips,” be sure to leave me a comment. And, if you know of any haunted places in North Texas … I’d be obliged if you would share the information! You know I want to go there.

Happy Anniversary! What a fun way to celebrate! Have you ever seen that Paranormal Cops show on A & E? I’ve only seen it once or twice, but it’s a group of Chicago cops who responded to so many paranormal calls that they decided to start a business ghost hunting. It was pretty good! Let us know what you find!

Thank you, gal. We aren’t to the anniversary yet, but in a couple of weeks. Yes, I’ve seen the paranormal cops, and always think of you when I see it. How come you aren’t going around with them? Chicago has some wonderful hauntings!

Sounds like an interesting way to spend your anniversary. A number of years ago (too many to try and remember) Chris and I took my two sons on a road trip in northern New Mexico. We stayed at the Saint James Hotel in Cimarron, which is touted as the most haunted place in New Mexico, with at least 13 ghosts. Our room wasn’t one of the haunted ones, but the room the boys stayed in did come with its own ghost.

The next morning at breakfast, we asked them if they had seen anything, but neither had witnessed any visible manifestation. During the meal, my younger son, Chuck, did complain about the ‘smell’ in the room, but his older brother, David, didn’t notice anything. Chuck said it wasn’t a bad smell, just something like really strong perfume. Our waitress got excited, and told us that the ghost in that room was a young lady (I’m being generous, it was the old west), and that she favored modern day visitors whom she fancied with a whiff of her perfume.

So Shelly, not sure if that counts, but you might want to make a trip over to Cimarron for your next anniversary! Looking forward to your results!

Interesting? Yeah, I know you were just being polite.

Now, I love your story about Cimarron (though we can’t afford a big trip with that wedding coming up this summer). That Chuck smelled ladies perfume is a “classic symptom” of a haunting. OOOOoooh! I hope I get a thrill like that at this (as yet unnamed to you) bed and breakfast.

Thanks for the tip about N.M. I have it on my “bucket list.”

It does sound like a good reason to snuggle in close and hang on for dear life. What better way to celebrate an anniversary. I will look forward to not only spooky tales but shimmering photographic globes of the encounters. Now come visit Take This Tune for a lot of other ways to hang on tight that you might need to know before that trip. :-)

I don’t know if I will get any “orbs” in a picture. And, I expect I might giggle too much for the ghosts to want to come around. I’ll see what happens and report my findings

What FUN!!! In fact, I had my husband read this post too and he decided that is a must for us as well. However, our anniversary has passed right on by, so we will go just for a good time!

Now, there’s a place in Gainesville, Hill House Manor. Lot’s of ghosts there according to the owners. Not sure if they have yet turned this into a b & b.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker March 29, 2010 at 6:46 am

I don’t know where Hill House Manor is! I must find it. Have you seen the B & B on the square? There is a restaurant below it. I went up there and took some pictures, but I’ve never posted about it.
I’ve thought about staying there, but I used to live in Gainesville, and it’s hard to think of it as a place to “get away.”
Let me know where y’all decide to go and if you see any ghosts.

Gotta remember to check out the side of your blog. That link to the photography blog “Exhile Imaging” is a great link for anyone interested in the recorded image. Love those commuter trains.

I even wrote about him in a post, Jamie. You must have missed it, because I named him. He’s Van Sutherland. He and his wife are both photographers … and I am soooo jealous of their skills!

have fun! My nerves can’t stand it anymore! ha ha ha

Shelly Kneupper Tucker March 29, 2010 at 6:48 am

Bless your heart, andrena! You gave up quickly. I’m not sure I blame you, though. Ghost stuff isn’t to everyone’s taste.

Shelly, thanks for the plug (again)!

too much fun, Shelly. Have a wonderfully haunting anniversary. Your hubby is a gem. :)

I understand there are several haunted sites around Alaska – just a hint for your bucket list. :)

I will make it to Alaska one day. It’s already on my bucket list :-) See, I have this blogging friend I haven’t ever gotten to meet … I think she’s something of a “gem” herself. I can’t get her to come to Texas, so I’m gonna have to go to her ;-)
