A Wild Kid’s Festival in Galveston

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on April 8, 2010

A festival for children is always fun, but it’s doubly so when I get paid to attend it! That’s my “good” for this Only The Good Friday. Make me tell stories at a festival? As Br’er Rabbit would say, “Please, Br’er Fox, don’t throw me in that brier patch.” Ostensibly I’m heading to Galveston, Texas on Friday to “work” at The Grand Kidsfest, hosted by the 1894 Opera House. Actually, although I will tell some stories, I’m planning on having some serious fun!

Yes, there will be a “haunted tour of Galveston (about which I will blog, of course). Y’all knew I wouldn’t miss out on that!

There will be a carriage ride, and I hope I see more of Galveston than I did on my last carriage ride:

the horse's rear end

His giddyup got up and went.

And I will consume about five pounds of shrimp — because I’ve lost about five pounds working in the garden this week!

shrimp kisses

Bubba didn't mention shrimp kisses.

Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it.

If you are in the Galveston area this weekend, stop by on Saturday with your kids and your camera. You might see folks like these:

Drummers drumming ... and the beat is wild!

zebra

He's not wild, he's behind bars in the petting zoo.

daredevil biker

He's wild ... he's a daredevil biker and that's how he lost the tooth.

They are beyond wild---they are crazy!

owl

He's too dignified to be wild.

Hope to see you there … and if you don’t make it, I’ll understand. Have a great weekend anyway.

Wonderful pictures. It looks like so much fun. Darn, I won’t be back in Texas until later in the month. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the state. Have a great weekend.

You, as well! You’ve gotta visit Galveston. The Gulf Coast isn’t as pretty as the ocean, but for Texas it’s OK.

I think I did it right this time, but it took two tries. Maybe you can delete the first one. I’m such a dork. Also forgot to enter here this morning after finishing the post. I’ll get it right sooner or later.

Wow, doing to a festival and getting paid for it. Nice work if you can get it. Sounds like a doubly good Friday for you. Go got it goin’ on. Cheers!

You are NOT a dork, and quit saying that! The internet is a confusing place, isn’t it?

I find the internet a VEWWWY confusing place, and endless in the amount of vigilance required for blogging functions. I’m sure I hadn’t a clue as to what I let myself in for when beginning my site this year. Sigh.

I first saw CommentLuv here, and immediately added it to my site. It’s a great little device, despite the fact that I could never elect which of my posts to show (if I understand its options correctly) when I place a comment. It selected for me, and not always the last one. I see CommentLuv on other sites about a third of the time, but my information (name, e & www) stores like it’s supposed to. Here I have to enter it each time, except on Fridays when Mr Linky facilitates.

I can see Nana’s site linked after her comment, above, and Jamie’s, below, but the little red heart icons are gone. No link with name of post shows up after my comment, although people can link to me by clicking on my name.

It was all working so well until about two weeks ago. You mentioned doing some www housekeeping, and I was hopeful that it would be resolved. But it seems as though maybe it’s something I’ve done (or undone). Any suggestions?

It was because of changes in the Thesis theme that Comment Luv wasn’t working (installed about two weeks ago). Everybody was complaining about it in the forums. I’ve just spent two hours digging in the php, so it better be working now  Otherwise, my darlin’, you and I will just have to live with it.

I’m cheating a big simply because any day of the week when you can listen to five Bonnie Raitt songs is a good one and I have to write a bit of a downer subject for Monday. Galveston is one of those cities on the must see list, but if you bring home a souvenier that owl would be nice. Have a great time making lots of kids big and small happy. Hope you are enjoying the Anthony Head tweets.

I didn’t realize that my own kid collects owls. I have to give the ones I find to him … sorry.
