Nesting Guest

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on April 30, 2010

Don’t look at this picture for the quality of the photography. I’m well aware that it’s not an award winning photo, and I’m stepping out on a limb to show you the jumble of pots on my back porch. I want you to look at it and see only the good (since “good” is what I seek each Friday). It’s the nest my wren made this year. Unfortunately, she won’t step out on a limb! Wrens like to build houses in “caves,” and that’s what she thinks this is. At least she didn’t invite all her friends and build a condominium!

Wren's nest

Y’all see those tiny eggs in there? So very fragile. And do you see how precarious her little “cavern” is? Lord have mercy. When it rains, she will have a swimming pool on the roof!

Though her house doesn’t seem ideal, it’s not quite as bad as her nesting last year, when she built her house in our garage. However, I’m already worrying for her with storms coming, and we have built a wind break (as opposed to breaking wind). Fortunately, last nesting season had a good outcome for my little Troglodytidae, and I’m hoping for the same this year. At least the once they hatch, the baby birds will mature in 13 days.

The silliest thing about her little nest, though is that it is within four feet of a chair on the porch that we use all the time. Obviously, she has no fear of us, perhaps thinking we are a benign “higher power.” Maybe she is one of the babies from last year? I talked to them so much that I think they recognized the sound of my voice. Maybe not … but don’t burst my bubble.

I love watching the new life in spring, and especially like it when it is close so I can observe it. Do you have any birds nesting at your house?

Tell me about some good things happening in your world!

What a treasure you have attracted to your porch. Sweet that you talk to them; that’s what they came for. I’m sure they do recognize your voice and friendly intentions. Aren’t they vulnerable to the pets?

My five cats are indoor animals. Right now, I don’t think we have any feral cats, because of the coyotes, so I think she should be OK. Let’s hope.

We have bluejays that nest in our oak tree every year. I’ve been watching them in the backyard gathering nesting supplies.

I haven’t seen any jays this year! Hadn’t thought about that until you mentioned them. Wonder why that is? I usually have several. Hmmm. Got cardinals and hummingbirds, though. I’ve never seen a nest for them.

Luv wrens…several yrs ago had a nest in my garage in a box of yard trash bags! This year we have a mallard nest in the bushes outside the garage door. Not a great place for a nest! LOL! As I gaze outside I see a hummingbird! Enjoy your weekend!

Ours didn’t nest in trash bags, but in some masks my husband used when working in the yard. Made a perfect cup to put the nest into  . Obviously your mallard isn’t afraid of the car! Hope she teaches her ducklings better than that.
You have a great weekend, too … one filled with good stuff.

We have one too! She built her nest on a shelf that is under our garage stairs where endless footsteps pound just above her as children run up and down the stairs. If we take a look at her eggs, she flies out of the garage to a tree nearby and fusses until we leave.

They are so funny when they get fussy! I can’t believe the crazy places they will build their nests.

Wow. That nest in the cavern is impressive. Pidgeons have made my gallery ceiling their home along with squirrels. But just there in pots, right there where you sit ? Wow.

She doesn’t seem to be afraid of me, and I talk to her when I’m out there. I’m anxiously watching her nest hoping that no feral cats are in the neighborhood. The eggs should hatch any day now.
