Uncommon Angles

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on May 11, 2010

If y’all are driving in Fort Worth on West 7th Street, you might see the old Montgomery Wards building. From 1928 until 2001 it was a warehouse and retail store. When “Monkey Wards,” as my Daddy called it, went out of business it became upscale shopping and condominiums. Tucked into the Montgomery Plaza, as it is now called, is my favorite art gallery. It’s aptly named Uncommon Angles.

Screech to a halt and park your car when you see the large, whimsical, iron sculpture by Barrett DeBusk out front. That artist’s motto is “art doesn’t have to be serious to be enjoyed,” and you can see he takes that motto to heart. Have y’all ever encountered any of his work?

Barrett DeBusk sculpture leads the way to Uncommon Angles.

The sign out front says “30 minute parking,” but if you are like me you can spend hours cruising through that store. It’s got original artwork from more than two hundred artisans, but I’m always on the lookout for the sculptures by DeBusk (which are peppered throughout the store). Although his work is my favorite, I can’t help but admire the other artwork. I just have to remember that I have five cats waiting to inspect any artwork that comes into my home.

Oh, yeah. My cats want a shelf full of glass!

Maybe I could put this high enough that they couldn’t reach it?

The cats would form a pyramid, little feline acrobats, to reach it.

Probably not, but I’m betting I could get this sculpture on my wall.

I wanted it but was afraid to look at the price tag.

If you are in my neck of the woods, you might want to browse this store. The prices there are actually quite reasonable, but be aware that handcrafted artwork isn’t priced like the Target Store. You can bet that I would fill my house with delightful art from Uncommon Angles … and I will just as soon as my lottery ticket wins.

When we moved from Texas to Kentucky, they were just starting work on the old Montgomery Ward building. Next time we’re there to see the in-laws in Saginaw, we’ll have to stop by. Thanks for keeping me up to date!

I don’t get to Fort Worth enough. So many treasures to be found there.

We grew up shopping at Montgomery Wards in Hobbs NM.
