Swords Into Plowshares

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on May 31, 2010

In the tiny Texas town of Pilot Point, there are three memorials on the town square to honor community members who gave their lives for their country. At any time of year, not just Memorial Day, you will find flowers placed by these stones.

I have never counted the names on them, but it seems a large number for such a tiny town. But for the need to defend our country in times of war, the young men and women who are listed on these stones would have enjoyed their lives in peace in this farming community. On this Memorial Day, let’s all hope that a day will come when we will need no more monuments on the squares in small towns to commemorate those who died in war.

As we enjoy our cookouts, picnics, and time with our family on this holiday let’s pause to remember what the day is really supposed to represent. Take just a moment of your time to send thoughts of thanks into the Universe to those who have fought for our freedom and those who have paid the ultimate price. If you see a veteran, or a member of the armed forces … thank them and their families for the sacrifices they make.

Let’s hope that it comes to pass in our lifetimes that

“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” ~~ ISAIAH 2:4

And remember the words of the late, great, rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix:

“When the power of love
overcomes the love of power,
the world will know peace.”

The list of veterans on our town plaque seems like a lot too. I feel a reverence when I see all the flags on the graves.

We like to stay home on Memorial Day weekend and watch war movies. My favorites are “Paths of Glory” and the “Band of Brothers” series. It is hard to imagine such conditions and dedication.

Thanks for the reminder to thank those who serve and their families.
I know my husband appreciates it when he is thanked for his service. I hear him thank his fellow veterans all of the time.

Any list seems long, doesn’t it? I can’t watch war movies very well. Send thanks to your husband
