We Call Him Fenster

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 11, 2010

Actually, we call all of the geckos at our house “Fenster,” because we can’t tell them apart. My husband tells me that it is the German word for “window,” and he is always right (Sshh! Stop giggling! I’m trying to get him to help me steam vacuum the floors today.). They acquired their nickname because these nocturnal critters cling to our windows at night eating bugs.

OK, he's not as cute as the Geico Gecko, but he is ours.

This isn’t the picture I would like to show you. I wanted to snap a picture from inside the window so you could see their tiny suction cup feet. I wanted to show you how the skin over their belly is such a thin membrane that you can watch the bugs go through their digestive tracks as they eat. Yeah, I know that’s gross, but the cats and I like it. However, I couldn’t show you that picture because then you would see how dirty my windows really are.

I hear you thinking, “Why in Thunder is she showing us a picture of a lizard?” I’m participating in Summer Stock Sunday at Around The Island. Robin asks us to share our summer photographs … and Fenster means summer to me.

One of the ways I know it is summer (aside from the obvious: 100 degree heat) is when Fenster is back on our bathroom window. I also know that it’s summer when the Cicada Chorale begins the cacophony in the trees. Or, when that dadgum mockingbird starts singing the Hallelujah Chorus outside my window at night, making me want to strangle him (which reminds me that today is the 50th anniversary of To Kill A Mockingbird. Congratulations, Harper Lee!).

Fenster is the quiet one … so I like him best. Don’t worry. Even though my husband is always right (wink, wink), I looked up the word. Unless the on-line translator and my Sweet Spousal Unit are in cahoots trying to get me to say a dirty word, “fenster” does indeed mean “window” in German.

So, what are your “signs of summer?”

He’s kinda cute it a creepy, crawly kinda way!! I keep thinking I want to relocate to other (warmer) areas of the country, but I’m not quite sure how I would deal living alongside these kinds of critters. ;)

Get five cats, and they won’t be your problem … and you will never have to buy cat toys

Femster is adorable.

For starters, should he not help you with steam cleaning of flooring, you might cheerfully explain to hubby that in English “Defenestrate” means to throw someone out of a window.

Summer is when going to bed at 9:00 means it still isn’t dark. Short day trips to parks, zoos, aquariums, museums etc.

He will help with the floors, because he likes to have parties :-) . Day trips! That’s summer, alright.

We get lizards too, these tiny little white ones. Great to have outside, since they eat mosquitos, but a real b!tch to get rid of if one sneaks in. Those critters are FAST!

I always try to catch them, but I rarely can until the cats have found them

Fenster is cute! And how wonderful to have insect eaters around…I hope he catches lots so you’re not bugged by them!

If he would just eat fire ants…

I think Fenster is much cuter than the Geico guy any day.

Isn’t he? His accent is Texan, though.

Fenster is very photogenic! We have geckos in our garage. While I welcome them as controllers of insects, they can be a bit messy. Glad we don’t have them in the house.

Messy when slammed in the garage door?
