Nuts And Bolts Of Love

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 15, 2010

Hypochondria is a gift passed through the generations. Being a perfectionist, I have developed it to a high art form. My husband knew this going into the deal, and he still took me “for better or worse, in sickness and health, et cetera.”

That’s true love, y’all.

A summer cold broadsided me on Saturday. I felt as if I’d been grabbed by the throat and repeatedly slammed against a wall. Even my hair hurt (that is not an exaggeration!). For the last three days I’ve been unable to climb the stairs to get to my computer … I was drowning in snot. I got claustrophobic and at that point, I begin to moan for the impossible.

“I just want my Momma,” I whined. “She could fix it. She’d bring me Campbell’s tomato soup with itty bitty oyster crackers floating on top. She’d give me a glass of ginger ale. Momma would smear me with Vick’s Vapo Rub to make it all better. On top of that, she would give me the button box so I’d have something to do when I get bored.”

My husband listened patiently. When I wasn’t looking he went to the store; and when he returned he quietly brought me a bowl of tomato soup with oyster crackers, a glass of ginger ale, and the jar of Vapo Rub.

He said, “I don’t have a button box, but I have some nuts and bolts you could sort.”

nuts & bolts

That’s true love, y’all.

Oh, Shelly, that is SOOOOO sweet!!! I love “true love” stories ;) I hope you’re feeling better. How could you not be after that????

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 5:50 am

Mr. Tucker is sweet, isn’t he? Bless his heart. And, surprisingly that is all it took to get me on the mend. I guess Momma was on to something … or love is a cure-all.

Van Sutherland July 15, 2010 at 5:54 am

Glad to have you back, Shelly. Summer colds are miserable. Tell Mr. Tucker he did a good job.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 5:59 am

Thank you, Van. Believe me, I’m glad to be back! When I won’t bother to climb the stairs to check my stats you know it’s more than just hypochondria. However, if summer colds aren’t miserable, I can make them so … you have to trust me on that one. I think that just having him make me laugh did more than anything to cure me.

Ain’t it amazing how much snot and phlegm the body can produce? That is the worst part about a summer cold. Glad you are feeling better & that Mr. Tucker is such a wonderful hubby!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 6:19 am

Thank you, Elizabeth. I got lucky with Mr. Tucker :-)

Anne July 15, 2010 at 6:27 am

So glad to hear you’re on the mend. I’d say Mr. Tucker is a keeper.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 6:33 am

Anne, you can’t be nearly as glad that I’m on the mend as Mr. Tucker is!! Bless his heart.

Anita July 15, 2010 at 6:34 am

HOpe you are well very quickly. There’s nothing worse than a summer cold. I don’t know why but they seem worse than the ones in the winter. The important thing is that you are surrounded by the nuts and bolts of love.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 6:39 am

I think that they are worse because the air is hot, Anita. At least that’s my story … and I’m sticking to it. Yep, that love is the best thing, for sure.

He’s a keeper for sure that one. I’ll bet it did just the trick, too.

Yeah, I’ll keep him around … who else would listen to me whine

Nathan July 15, 2010 at 10:41 am

Well, tell Mr. Tucker he’s a kiss ass and giving the rest of us men a bad name; especially when you you post it here for the world to see!!

I’m just kidding, that’s awesome! I had a summer cold a few weeks ago, they do suck and yes I whined to my wife. She took care of and put up with me!! LOL

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 15, 2010 at 2:23 pm

I only wish that all the world would come to see, Nathan. And, if it would increase my blog stats, I’d tell you more :-) . Now, you remember how well your wife took care of you … when she comes down sick it’s time for payback!

Lisa @ Grandma's Briefs July 15, 2010 at 2:56 pm

That truly is love at its best. Funny how a few nuts and bolts can make the heart go a twitter!

I’m glad you’re no longer drowning in snot. I can’t think of any worse death than that!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 19, 2010 at 5:53 am

I can probably think of worse deaths :-( I don’t want to! But, it does take very little to keep me happy.

Terry Elisabeth July 17, 2010 at 6:48 pm

What a wonderful man !

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 19, 2010 at 5:56 am

Yeah *sigh*

I had a chuckle about this story. I also have just a cold (a week after my husband was “dying” from the same thing). I made him cups of warm tea with lemon, rubbed his back and made sure he was rested and warm. Wonderfully, I also received the same loving attention when I became ill later in the week, although I am still waiting for my “nuts and bolts” to play with :)

Shelly Kneupper Tucker July 19, 2010 at 5:59 am

Don’t EVEN think I’ll share mine :-) . Oh, probably I would. But, they are much better when they are delivered by the one you love.
