Excuse Me, Gotta Run

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on July 20, 2010

fresh fruit plate

I was trying to compensate for the fact that we were serving our guests pizza that my husband had brought home from work the day before. They were perfectly untouched pizzas, and nobody spat in them or anything, but I felt guilty.

So, I bought a truckload of fresh fruit: watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, cherries. Yum! I sliced it all nicely, and arranged it in what I thought was a quite artful manner.

I don’t think the guests even noticed.

Sure, they ate the pizza … snarfed it right down. They were a bit picky about the fruit, however. I could have opened a can of fruit cocktail, and they would have been satisfied.

The good news is that there is fresh fiber fruit left over for us. The bad news is that there is a LOT of fruit left over for us.

Ahem.

Enough said.

That looks really nice. I’d have been impressed.

I shall have to invite you next time, Elizabeth. I wanted someone to “ooh” and “ahh.”

That looks delicious!! I know it’s almost a sin to be from Chicago and not exactly be a fan of pizza, but I’d rather have your fruit masterpiece any day!

The pizza was actually pretty good for “storebought.” The fruit is marvelous … but oh, what it does to me!

I’m a huge fan of fruit, if I had been there you’d have a LOT less to consume as leftovers. I don’t get how people can be picky about fruit. Growing up our fruit was apples and oranges so when I see a scrumptious display like that I am content to eat that even if baking is also offered.

I could probably ship it to you :-) . Actually, I have gotten pretty adventurous with fruit, too. Growing up, our fruit was in a can.

Gorgeous fruit – I’m impressed! That’s better than pizza any day. You could make your leftovers into a nice sorbet that could be sampled over a few days – that’s what I plan to do with am embarrassment of farm stand blackberries currently hanging out in my freezer.

Can you make watermelon and cantaloupe into a sorbet, though? It doesn’t freeze either. So, I’m eating fruit 3 x a day … thus I “gotta run.” ahem.

I don’t understand this at all. Had I been there, I would have eaten a lot of fruit, had some pizza and then gone back for more fruit. Then I would have helped you clean up afterward, hoping you’d ask me to take some of the fruit home. I never tire of fruit and, if I don’t have it every day, feel quite deprived. Just thinking of people out there who don’t eat fresh fruit piled in front of them makes me depressed. I can’t imagine how you felt.

People’s taste buds have gotten all out of whack due to eating too many processed food products way too often. We’re forgetting what real food tastes like. And nothing is better for us than fresh produce. Maybe it’s too late now, but have you made smoothies? Combine with plain yogurt and blend. Or make ice cream if you know anyone with an ice cream maker: now that’s a party idea.

Excuse me. I gotta go eat some peaches now.

Smoothies from melon don’t appeal to my taste buds, Joy. I don’t know why they were not interested in fresh fruit, but that left more for me.
