Out Of Synch

by Shelly Kneupper Tucker on August 15, 2010

Yesterday, I awoke with a feeling of foreboding. Does that ever happen to any of y’all? Nothing seemed quite right. All I wanted to do was pull the covers over my head … but it was too dadgum hot to do that. Dreading the triple digit heat we expected, my husband told me to think of it in terms of degrees Celsius, so it would only be 38° or 39° instead of 102°. That didn’t work for me. I could only moan that I left my heart in San Francisco.

Although The City was shrouded in fog most of the time I was there, at least the temperatures were mild. OK, the nekkid truth is that I was bitc… (eek!) complaining about the cold.

Golden gate bridge in fog

I apologize for the above picture. I had to take it through the windshield as we drove on the bridge, because my husband wouldn’t stop the car for me. Ignore the bugs; I just wanted you to see the fog.

Yesterday, my brain was in a fog, because I knew the tasks in front of me. The first order of business was to attack my kitchen. Ants had invaded my countertops … and I deplore those little buggers. I couldn’t stand the thought of cooking in the kitchen with them crawling all over everything. They seemed to be coming from the edges of the sink, so we needed to caulk it.

I’ll spare you the gory details. Suffice to say that in the process of trying to lift the sink to caulk the edges, a plumbing problem developed. The sink had to be removed, a trip to the hardware store was necessary to replace some plumbing, and the removal of the sink exposed wood on the wall that needed to be replaced. It is a job for a professional. It will be next week before we can contact someone who can do the work … and God only knows when they will be able to get to it. For the next few days I am “out of sink,” so to speak.

After a day of wrestling with the kitchen, my husband and I decided to go to a local bar and have a drink or two. Hey, sometimes this is required therapy! I ordered “hard lemonade,” because I had never tried it. In discussing it, I wondered if I could find a recipe on-line to make it myself. I pulled out my “trusty” iPhone to research that idea.

However, in the middle of a Google search, my iPhone turned itself off! That was odd, to say the least. I tried to turn the phone back on, but all I got was the Apple logo. It wouldn’t turn on all the way … and it wouldn’t turn back off. The screen was frozen! There were no Apple geniuses in the bar. How could I live all weekend without my phone? We left the bar early so I could come home to my computer and try to figure out the problem.

I’ll spare you the gory details. Suffice to say that on-line research gave me some ideas. I was finally able to get it to turn on, I charged it fully, and I “synched” it with iTunes (while updating to the newest software). That must have been the problem: my iPhone was out of sink synch, too. Whew!

My sense of dread yesterday morning was well earned. It could be worse … but I thought it was going to get better! On the flight home, I saw five (count them …5) rainbows outside my window! I’ve never seen a rainbow while in flight before, and I hoped it was a good omen. Obviously not.

I apologize for the above picture. It was taken through the window of the plane because the pilot wouldn’t stop for me. He and my husband conspired against me this trip. Just look in the center and you can very faintly see that rainbow.

Yesterday was a “Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” but I lived to tell the tale. On the upside, my iPhone is in synch again. Although my kitchen is “out of sink” for awhile, I think we got rid of the ants.

[Note: As I finished the draft of this post, I checked Facebook and discovered that one of my favorite photographers, Van Sutherland, had a computer crash. A 750 GB external drive, with several years of his marvelous photos, fried. My yesterday wasn't so bad at all in comparison.

I know you are bouncing in your seats to tell me about your own worst day. Go ahead. I can sympathize!]

Sorry you were imitating Alexander. Let’s hope Pollyanna comes to call and your can have several glad days in a row.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 15, 2010 at 10:13 am

Thanks, Jamie. But, in this mood I’d prolly slap Pollyanna right upside the head  Oh, it will get better … and at least it gives me something about which to complain.

Sorry you had a bad day, Shelly, although the hard lemonade should have helped. I’ve come to grips with my loss, and if that’s the worst that happens to me this year, I’ll count myself a lucky man!

We, too, are ‘out of sink’. Our kitchen faucet broke last week, and we’re still awaiting replacement parts from Moen. So hang in there, you’re not alone.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 15, 2010 at 10:15 am

Oh, I feel for you on waiting for parts. I wish that was all we had to do, but we are going to find a contractor … and hope that we got a good one! I was so looking forward to cooking all the wonderful vegetables I just bought. I guess I can wash them in the bathtub.

As for your loss, YOU may have come to grips with it, but I’m as sad as if the local art museum (with all my favorite exhibits) had burned to the ground. Your loss is ours!

I was “out of oven” for 8 days a week ago. I don’t like being out of things. If I had your day yesterday, I might have tried a hard lemonade, too, although, I think Long Island Iced Teas are more tasty ;)

I lost my external hard drive with all of my photos, too. I had never heard of an external hard drive failing and I called to complain to the company. They told me I should have my external hard drive backed up to yet another external drive. That’s ridiculous. When would it end? Sorry to your friend. That sucks!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 15, 2010 at 10:18 am

Back up the backup? Grrr. Technology is the tail wagging the dog sometimes, isn’t it?
As for you being “out of oven,” I felt bad for a minute … then remembered that you hate to cook!!! As long as there is a barbecue grill, I could survive that. I can survive the sink, too, but oh, Lordy I’m gonna wail and moan!

The iphone has been the biggest pain in my butt since Thursday night. I synced before going to a concert, it seemed to be working at home and after the concert, it would not connect with my home network. You know how you’re suppose to just turn your phone on and it’s suppose to connect to your home wifi automatically? Seems that doesn’t happen anymore and I am not the only one if you look at the apple forum. However, Apple is denying that they are the problem and that it’s our routers? WTH, I didn’t change my routers, you changed some software code. Then last night the apple support forums were down…..how does that happen?
Minor inconvenience, I know compared to your day, but if it’s any consolation, I have a tub with no faucet up in my bathroom that needs to get ripped out and new tile. After 5 weeks, the tile guy finally came out on Friday.
Pictures on hard drives? I download on my ibook and on my husband’s pc, plus I upload to flickr. One time of almost losing it all on the ibook had me nervous. But really, in the scheme of things, these are all inconveniences and we are lucky that this is what we complain about.
Hope your Sunday is better. Sometimes staying in bed with a good book is a nice alternative.

Oh crud! Now you have me worried that there will be more problems with this iPhone! YOU are the one who understands technology … what the heck am I going to do???
Today will be better. I keep trying to laugh about it. We took the doors off the cabinets and emptied it out. The cats think these are marvelous new “hidey-holes.” Just hope I can break them of it once repairs are made.

Do you guys have the iPhone 3G? The latest software update is causing problems with that model. Too old! I guess. I didn’t upgrade the software on my 3G when I heard about that. Not sure what the fix is…

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 16, 2010 at 4:20 am

This happened before I upgraded. My son had upgraded & said he loved it. Because it crashed, I thought maybe some of the apps needed the upgrade. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m not going for the new model. When this is gone, it’s an Amish phone for me (& an iPad).

That’s a classic home repair story, and one of the reasons I hope never to own a house again as long as I live. Good luck to you & I hope the repairs don’t uncover still another lurking disaster.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker August 18, 2010 at 6:09 am

As I anxiously await the cabinet guy this morning, ellen, all I can say is, “From your mouth to God’s ears!”
