A Well Bred Texan Does Not Brag

At the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo many years ago, I met a long lanky man in a cowboy hat. His crisp white shirt was starched, his jeans were pressed, and his boots were made of ostrich skin, but they were “working boots.” When we were introduced, he shook my hand and smiled as he offered a soft-spoken, “Good to meet you, ma’am.”

I thought I had met a shy cowboy, who would later be competing in the rodeo. Instead, I found out I had just met Sid Richardson Bass, one of the wealthiest of all Americans! No one would ever have known it by his unassuming manner.

Now, I grew up knowing that folks from other places viewed Texans as “braggarts.” It’s true that some are, but a well-bred Texan does not brag. My Momma taught me right. That’s why I have a hard time acknowledging when someone gives me an honor. It isn’t that I don’t appreciate it, or that I’m not proud about it. I’m just not accustomed to jumping up and down and saying, “Hey look at me!”

Because I was taught not to show off, I hide the buttons at the bottom of the sidebar or bury them in a post. Some are even on another page and you have to click the sign that says, “see buttons.” Again, I’m delighted to have them, but don’t think I should shove them in everybody’s face.

thinkingblogger.jpgLori Greenberg at Bead Nerd just nominated me for Thinking Blogger. Lori, thank you for that honor and your kind words. I’ve gotten the award a few times before (ok, it’s the 6th time), but it’s always nice when someone thinks I “think.” I try hard to hide that from y’all “baa tawkin’ lack iss.” Go ahead and say it out loud. You know you want to…and, yes, that’s exactly how I sound when I have put on my twang.

rgb.jpg Several days ago, I had gotten the Rockin’ Girl Blogger Award from Comedy Plus and I named six Rockin’ Girl Bloggers. Then, Yellow Rose’s Garden gave it to me and Coming to a Nursery Near You gave it to me, too. How do they know that all I do all day is sit in that rocking chair and try to frighten the long-tailed cats?

Thank you all for your kind words, and for the honors. I feel very humbled to be nominated for awards from bloggers of your caliber. Even if I don’t wear my “bling” at the top of the page, I’m delighted to have gotten it, and I appreciate you.

Now, I’m supposed to pass this on to other bloggers. That’s where my real problem comes. You can look on my blogroll and on my Link Love and see tons of names there. I think that all of them rock, and I know they all make me think. Every one of them deserve those awards!

I just can’t play favorites. I’ll tell you a little secret: When I was a child, I was too quiet and nerdy to run with the “popular crowd.” This was, I think, a major disappointment to my mother. She was hoping to have begotten a cheerleader or majorette, and I didn’t make the team. I felt her disappointment deep in my soul. I still have nightmares about not being chosen for a team! I’m a grown woman, for heaven’s sake and that shouldn’t matter anymore. But, I still dream it.

I don’t want anybody else not to “make the team.” I’m very generous with Link Love on a regular basis, so I don’t feel as if I’m out of line. I’m not going to pass these on again, but you can take one if you want it. Does that work? Am I being a party pooper? I don’t send chain letters on either, does this mean I’m going to have bad luck?

Thinking bloggers

“I’m tryin’ ta think, I’m tryin’ ta think
…and nothin’s happenin’!”

If you are looking for Wordless Wednesday, skip down a post. I had something I had to say today:
Teamouse (or as I call her, Sweet Tea) at Tea Time Ramblings passed an award to me several weeks ago. I was honored and overwhelmed. It was The Thinking Blogger Award.

thinkingblogger.jpg

I’d received it twice, though I don’t feel like I deserve it, because this blog is not “deep water.” I’ve been trying to decide to whom I should pass it along. Just as I got close to having a post ready, Rose DesRochers passed back to me the one I had given her. I’m deeply grateful to both of them, but can only do one at a time. It takes a lot of thought to pull these together! Right now I’m behind in the work that makes me money…and all I want to do is blog! So, I’m naming five people, and they have to promise not to give it back to me! I’m pulling a Scarlett O’Hara on the second one: “I’ll think about that tomorrow, for tomorrow’s another day.” In no particular order:

  • Simon, The Freelance Cynic, causes me to think and to laugh. His twisted sense of humor makes for funny posts, but he can write rather poignantly as well. His site is not G-rated, but I enjoy it.
  • Alissa at I Wish makes me wish I knew how to use a camera. Her photography is superb, and her essays are delightful.
  • Ingrid at Through My Eyes gets on a rant, and makes me want to jump up and say “Hallelujah.”
  • Robyn at Pistols, Passions, and Potions describes herself as “an aspiring writer.” When she does her meticulous research for her works, she shares interesting historical facts. She also posts about her travels and about words (two of my favorite interests).
  • Lisa, AKA Mama Milton is a blogger I have just found. She entered my This Blog Blows My Dress Up Contest, and I’m enjoying reading more of her posts. I love her sense of humor.
  • Here are the rules:

    1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
    2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
    3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.

If the rest of you folks haven’t seen these sites, check them out and see if you enjoy them.

I appreciate y'all talking to me, Rose, (((((HUGS))))) sandi, and Freelance Cynic!
    Thinking Blogger X 2

Stephanie’s Confessions of a Book-a-Holic tagged me with The Thinking Blogger Award. I was as surprised as a puppy when it meets its first porcupine.
    thinkingblogger.jpg
In the same set of comments, Geeky Streak tagged me with The Thinking Blogger Award. At that point, you could have knocked me over with a feather.
    thinkingblogger.jpg
Now, I have to put on my thinking cap and tell you what I thunk. The goal of the meme is to “tag blogs with real merits, i.e. relative content, and above all - blogs that really get you thinking!” I’m tagging 10 people, in no particular order of preference, who all do just exactly that.
    DRUMROLL, PLEASE:

  • MeeAugraphie is sublime poetry. Marcia puts in words what my heart thinks, but hasn’t the ability to say. She makes me ache to be able to express (so succinctly) the magnificence and wonder of the world around me. Since I can’t, I read what she writes.
  • J’s Thoughts & Musings. Jenny, besides being one of the nicest people I have never met, makes me think every day. She and her husband are raising three boys in the northeast, and she works full time, too. She still has time to fiddle with the css on her Blogger blog AND help a stray waif like me. I found this post, about parenting a college teen, to be very thought provoking, but I love her Thursday Thirteens, too.
  • SusieJ is sensational. Go to her site and read her “about” section; read it first. Then read this which is her entry in Scribbit’s April Write Away Contest about “growth.” If those two don’t hook you, then there is no hope for you. This woman touches the heartstrings. I’ve just found her, and I’ll be back again and again.
  • Christine at Big Pink Cookie is a “techie.” She is always sharing news of the latest cool gadget or program or link that she found, and I have discovered tons of interesting things by reading her blog that I never would have found on my own. Christine is also a knitter, and a photographer. AND, she is the first blogger I’ve actually gotten to meet. She took pictures of me with my spinning wheel in Galveston this weekend.
  • Writer’s Cramps by Gattina is always a treat for me. She is what we call in my world “a storyteller’s storyteller.” I’d love to sit in a rocking chair with her and just shut up and listen, but that won’t happen because I don’t shut up and Gattina lives in Belgium. She has traveled the world over, and her posts often tell of her journeys, or her neighbors. She participates in a lot of memes, and never fails to get me giggling…. or thinking.
  • Frugal for Life is one of the first blogs I ever read, and I subscribed to it. Dawn works hard at providing tips and links for those who want to live a frugal life and those who want to think they do. Out of 10 points, she rates a 10 in my book, even though I only “lurk” on her site. I don’t feel qualified to comment.
  • my topography: the shape of daily life is breathtaking. She paints pictures with words. My words are not worthy to describe it, so just go lose yourself in her imagery.
  • Sandy and Kurt is a delightful site to visit. Sandy was a teacher in a “former life,” but now she’s a stay at home mom. Interspersed with the pictures of her adorable kids are snippets of wisdom and whimsy.
  • This is not my “token male.” It’s just a blog I enjoy. Least Significant Bits happens to be written by a guy named John. I like to read his reminiscences, which are often humorous and sometimes poignant. I also enjoy his photos. Maybe he can lead me to some other “guy blogs” to read!
  • Rose DesRochers has a site that always makes me ponder a new idea from a fresh perspective. I think it’s humorous that she has recently had some controversy because she mentions S-E-X on her site. It won’t take much reading to figure out that it isn’t a porn site(not that I would know, just in case my family or one of my patrons is reading this!). Her post on blogging etiquette is one that everyone out here commenting on blogs should read.
  • TA DA!

Friends, these ten people are all bloggers I admire and respect. I hope you will visit their sites, then come back here and tell me what you think. Many times I find new bloggers to admire by following the links in my comments. If you don’t comment, I might never find you. As for the ten bloggers I’ve named, it’s your turn to tell us the bloggers who are high on your list and pass the torch.
    Here are the rules:
    1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
    2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
    3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote (here is an alternative silver version if gold doesn’t fit your blog).
