Happy Thanksgiving! I imagine that you all are ready for the feasting and football. What? You haven’t slain the turkey yet? We haven’t either, because there will be no “traditional” Thanksgiving in our family this year. With our children scattered around the country, my Sweet Spousal Unit and I haven’t had a real Thanksgiving since we married, although we have attended the feasts thrown by other members of the family. This year, we are quietly celebrating — just the two of us.

That doesn’t mean I’m not thankful, though. Oh, I am, indeed. Since it’s Thursday, and there was a meme I in which I once participated called Thursday Thirteen (I had some pretty funny Thursday Thirteen posts), I thought I’d remind myself of thirteen things for which I am thankful.

I’m thankful that I woke up this morning. At my age, that is always a pleasant surprise. Not only did I wake up, but it’s a crisp autumn morning … a perfect fall day.

I have delightful children and family members. Even though I won’t see them for a Thanksgiving feast, I know that they are there.

I don’t have to eat turkey! Y’all, turkey is OK, but it is not my favorite meat. Perhaps if it were fried in bacon grease I would enjoy it more, but I’m delighted that I won’t see it on my plate this year. Did you know that 45 million turkeys were sacrificed for this holiday? Makes you feel guilty, doesn’t it?

If the thought of murdering turkey bothers you, there was a show on NPR yesterday that might have interested you. The radio was talking about recipes for vegan Thanksgiving. The guest described a recipe using seitan to replicate smothered pork chops. I’m thankful I don’t have to eat seitan!

I’m grateful that if I wanted to eat either of those things, I could afford to do so. I know I’m lucky.

I’m grateful that my husband doesn’t care about football. He will watch it, but he doesn’t have to see it. I might have found the only man in Texas who isn’t a football fan (and that’s probably just because he is imported from California).

I’m grateful that we have some movies from Netflix, so we don’t have to watch television fare (The Illusionist, Lady in the Water, and Labyrinth are waiting).

Although my coffee house is closed for the holiday (who do they think they are, anyway?) I have my own teeny tiny espresso machine in case of emergencies. The mochas that I make are not nearly as good as the ones served by my barrista at Jupiter House, but an addict will take whatever she can find when she is in a pinch.

I’m filled with gratitude that the milk isn’t sour!

Knock wood, we haven’t gotten the swine flu or any other respiratory ailment this year. That’s pretty unusual, because when I tell stories in public schools I get exposed to every ailment there is. So far, I haven’t brought home any “souvenirs.”

This morning, I stepped upstairs to water my plants and discovered that my Christmas cactus had exploded into blossom. That plant needs some “reality orientation,” but it was a beautiful surprise.

Over the last several days, I have taken some time off from blogging to deal with the real world. I am eternally grateful that my inner guilt meter has not gone haywire over that. I hope to get back to regular blogging before the next month starts.

And, yes, I am darned thankful for the blogging friends I have made over the last three years. Although I might never meet any of you in person, having that network of on-line support makes me happy every day. Thank you all for the good times you have given me.

There you have it. Thirteen reasons to be thankful, and I didn’t even scratch the surface. Y’all enjoy your turkey, your football, and most of all your family! I hope this is a day that will give you splendid memories.

FIRST, I have to tell you that YOU have a chance to win free tickets to see Celtic Thunder in concert. I was given the opportunity to award a pair of tickets to FOUR different people. It’s easy to enter (just go to the contest post and comment), and you can increase your chances to win by helping me spread the word. If you aren’t familiar with Celtic Thunder, I’ve got some YouTube videos (one on the contest post, and an amazing one on my original post about the group). Comments on this post don’t count as an entry … you have to go to the contest page.

Christmas ornaments are already out, and Halloween isn’t even over yet! That brings out the witch in me. But, shopping helps! AARP magazine (yes, I am old, and it’s my “literature”) had some nifty ideas. It said, “This holiday season, treat yourself well by pampering others — with surprises that are good for their health, good for the planet … and good for your wallet.” Check them out at Feel Good Gifts on the AARP website. If you want, I’ll give you my wish list … I didn’t think so. Bah Humbug!

My friend Jessica the Rock Chick gets on a roll sometimes. She has taken it upon herself to start a movement, called Walk This Way, to increase awareness of depression. Please check out what she has to say, and if it appeals to you, then support her cause. You can even put a picture of her cat boots on your blog!

When I was a young, there was this obnoxious kid in the neighborhood. We called him “The Saint,” because everyone’s mom thought he was sooo perfect! Can you imagine having to be around a saint all the time? What if you were kin to a saint?? Bleeding Espresso and My Bellavita have interviews going on right now with a man named Justin Catanoso, who wrote a book about a cousin who is a saint! You can win a copy just by asking a question for Justin.

Are you feeling like writing? I know of a couple of projects. Damien at Postcards From The Funny Farm has a Blog Carnival that will inspire people to be great by sharing stories about people who were great (even if it was only your Grandpa). He calls it “Amazing Visions.” The deadline for submissions is this Sunday at 2pm. Walt Disney is his logo for the contest.

Stacey at Create A Balance has a Life Balance Group Writing Project in the works. If you’ve discovered how to achieve balance in life, go visit and participate. If you haven’t discovered balance…perhaps you should go read what folks have to say! I stole an image from you Stacey. You can slap me if you can reach me.

I didn’t check to see who won. You might want to enter for October!

Heather at Beautiful British Columbia posted about a medicine bag she made for the Good Medicine project. Though I haven’t gotten any in the mail yet, I’m still hopeful that people will participate to send some good luck to kids with cancer. I’ve got some good folks helping me spread the word. I haven’t posted all the pictures of the 14 bags I’ve made, but I’ll get that done soon. Meanwhile, you can look at these if you want.

Those things have nothing in common, except that I’ve blogged about them before. People come to my blog every day searching for them, so I thought I’d put them together in one place to make it easy. Interspersed with some other things I want you to know about, it can be my Thursday Thirteen # 48.

First, let me tell you folks who aren’t bloggers that we know a lot about you from our statistics programs. I know from mine: where you are located, when you came to visit, how long you stayed, if you followed any links, and what you were seeking when you came here. Don’t worry, I don’t know your name (unless you are that man stalking me from a computer at a university in Lubbock, Texas. I know who you are.)

Let me make THIS perfectly clear: I do not rent out the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile! I showed a picture of the weinermobile one time and now I have people writing me about it. A 9th grader wanted to rent it to use as a limousine for her friends to go to a party; several people have written to ask me where they can see it; and one man wanted to arrange a tour of it for his son, because (I guess) he wanted his kid to see a big weenie. I can’t help y’all!

My friend Connie, who is not a blogger, knows about my addiction to bacon. I think a lot of people might, because I’ve written about it more than once. In fact, this Thursday Thirteen post about bacon is the one that has been viewed the most often, because somebody “Stumbled” it.

<img style="margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right;"src="http://thiseclecticlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/bacon_toothpicks.jpg" alt="bacon toothpicks Ring Tailed Tooter, Clint Walker, Bottletrees and The Oscar Meyer Weinermobile" title="bacon_toothpicks" width="200" height="338" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2969" />

Connie knows that my cholesterol is high, and I’m steering away from bacon. She sent me these bacon flavored toothpicks as a gift. Connie, honey, thank you …but an addict cannot take “a little taste” of her addiction! I’m tortured just looking at them!

Connie is still putting together afghans for Share A Square. That’s another thing people come here to find. We got so many afghan squares, that we are making “extras” for the kids who didn’t get to go to Camp Sanguinity.

These will be delivered to Cook Children’s Medical Center later this month. I actually have four more (28), but I couldn’t stack them that high. I’ve got enough squares for about eight more afghans here at the house, and about eight more are being worked.

Though we aren’t doing the afghans this year, because I don’t have room in my house to do it again, we have another project in the works called “Good Medicine.” I’ve been working on these medicine bags to give to the kids.

I could use some help with this project! If you can help me advertise it, or can get involved, I’d be grateful — and so would 140 kids who are touched by cancer! I can do it alone, but I know that there are folks out there who want to help. I hope you are one of them.

I found another charity I want to support! It’s called Nothing But Nets. For just $10, you can save lives! Malaria kills more than one million kids a year. A donation to this cause will buy a net, distribute it to a family and educate them on it’s use. You can also buy a pretty cool t-shirt and with that, a net gets sent.

I’ve talked about bottle trees on the blog before, and I said I wanted one. People ask me regularly if I have made it yet. I have bottles, I have a felled tree, but I haven’t gotten around to it. I showed a picture of a bottletree that I admired, and it happened to belong to Cindee, who is quite a gardener. You should visit her — she’s a sweetheart.

OK, and I showed a picture of Clint Walker half nekkid. To all of you who have written: No, he doesn’t look like that anymore. No, I can’t fix you up with him.

People come to another Thursday Thirteen of mine where I give a lesson in Texas language. They want to know the definition of “ring-tailed tooter.” If you look it up in the dictionary, you will find a picture of Sarah Palin — or even, perhaps, Joe Biden (I sass political candidates with equality — well, no I don’t — but I’ll sass Democrats, too). They are both “ring-tailed tooters” in my book. Not in a good way!

I’m already sick of the political “campaigns!” I’m fed up with the mud-slinging. In fact, I think there should be a law that a political candidate cannot even mention the other candidates (even by veiled reference). Let them talk about themselves, their own records, and their own intentions so we can make an informed choice. It’s worse than High School out there.

I’m thinking about writing in a candidate instead of voting for the choices available. I’m going to vote for T. Boone Pickens! You don’t know him? He is a legendary oilman, but he has a plan to break America’s dependence on foreign oil. I figure that if we fix our energy problems, the rest might fall in line. He’s my man.

In fact, I’ve written him a letter! He wants to begin by harnessing the power of the wind. He says that a 2005 Stanford University study found that there is enough wind power worldwide to satisfy global demand 7 times over — even if only 20% of wind power could be captured. I’ve suggested that if he would put all the political candidates together in one room, he could get enough wind to power…
no I didn’t!

These days, if you drive along the highways of Texas, you are bound to see a “restaurant row” outside of any metropolitan area. Chances are good that , if you look real hard, you will see something called “Texas Roadhouse” nestled among those slick, shiny establishments. There is another chain restaurant called “Logan’s Roadhouse.” They are identical twins. I can’t tell which one I’m in if I don’t see the name.

Don’t let the names fool you. Those places are “Roadhouse Wannabes.” It takes more than just a name to make a “roadhouse.”

Now, there is a new restaurant here in Denton called “Rooster’s Roadhouse.” It’s not a true roadhouse either, but I can forgive its pretensions. The food is delicious and the beer is cold. It’s a little bit closer to a true roadhouse than those chain restaurants are. The chain restaurants are Corporate America’s idea of a roadhouse (some guys in suits in New York City try to play “redneck”). Rooster’s Roadhouse is run by three “good old boys.” They are big, strapping, local boys; and if you are expecting good barbecue and burgers you ain’t even gonna get it from a skinny cook!

My Daddy could have told you about a “roadhouse.” I’m trying to tap in to what he’d tell you if he were here.

Thirteen Signs of a True Roadhouse

A true roadhouse is NOT a family restaurant. It’s a juke joint, a dive.

A Roadhouse is dark and smoky, not brightly lit. The “non-smoking section” is outside.

There are peanuts in a true roadhouse, and you throw the shells on the floor. But, those shells rarely get swept up…and there are no cute signs. Quite often, the peanuts are stale.

The “decor” in a true roadhouse is usually beer signs, tattered posters, and motorcycle or car parts hanging from the walls and ceiling.

There are dead animals staring at you from the walls of a true roadhouse, but they didn’t come from an interior decorator. The Bubba behind the bar probably bagged that deer, and you might just be eating it.

The beer is cold in a true roadhouse, but you don’t get many choices. “Designer beers” are unheard of there, and if you ask for a fancy brew you might get laughed out of the joint. Don’t expect fancy cocktails at a true roadhouse, either. Scotch and soda is about as fancy as it gets.

The menu at a true roadhouse (if there is a menu) is not slick and fancy. It’s a greasy, tattered typed sheet of paper with changes marked on it with a Sharpie.

True roadhouse food does NOT have cute names (like “Red Neck Sushi” or “White Trash Tartar Sauce”). The establishment assumes you already know that.

Don’t expect a fancy chef salad at a true roadhouse. A “salad” means a wedge of iceberg lettuce, a slice of very pale tomato, and a half a cup of Thousand Island Dressing.

At a true roadhouse, you won’t be offered “grilled” anything. It’s not a health food restaurant. You can expect beef, pork, or chicken. The condiments are: ketchup and tabasco sauce.

The food at a true roadhouse is as greasy as the menu, but it’s usually quite delicious. More so the more beer you imbibe. Drink freely.

Your waitress at a true roadhouse isn’t dressed in any fancy uniform (unless it is one of those shapeless blue “work shifts”). Usually, she looks just like the rest of the customers (she has a beehive hairdo, a bored expression, and she is popping her chewing gum). She is not “perky.”

That waitress might shout your order to the cook, so don’t be alarmed.

The music at a true roadhouse is loud and your choices are: Country.

Now, did I leave anything out? You can tell me about it. If you leave a comment, you will be magically linked at the bottom of the page. I don’t use Mr. Linky. I hope yours is a good day! Maybe you can go out and find a roadhouse!

No, they don’t have anything to do with each other. However, all are on my mind this week, as well as a lot of other things. I’ve been doing a lot of “pondering and piddling” this week, y’all. I’ve had plenty of time to think, because I’ve been all by my lonesome.

No, they don’t have anything to do with each other. However, all are on my mind this week, as well as a lot of other things. I’ve been doing a lot of “pondering and piddling” this week, y’all. I’ve had plenty of time to think, because I’ve been all by my lonesome.

I look out the kitchen window and see my husband’s car in the driveway. My heart dances.

I think, “He’s home!” Then, I remember that I drove him to the airport Monday, and my shoulders droop. He got on the company jet and flew away for a week long business trip. Sniff

I’ve gotta stop looking out the kitchen window! I shouldn’t be in the kitchen anyway, because I’m trying to control my cholesterol. If I go in the kitchen, I crave BACON, and I’ve sworn off of it until I’ve gotten the cholesterol reduced. Y’all know what happens if somebody says, “Don’t think about elephants?” Yep.

Yes, I’m on cholesterol medication. It’s this really nasty powder that tastes like old “Tang.” Remember Tang? It was that orange powder that you mixed with water. Advertisers sold us kids on it long ago by telling us it was what the astronauts drank. Poor astronauts! That stuff tasted awful even when it hadn’t been sitting open on the cabinet for six months.

The directions on this medication say that I can “mix it with water or the liquid of choice.” Jack Daniels?

There were some directions on the frozen meal I pulled out to cook, too. Don’t y’all love the idiotic instructions that manufacturer’s put on their products sometimes? Do they think I’m as stupid as I look? This one told me to eat the meal in the steamer bowl or, “Meal may also be enjoyed by placing steamed food on a plate and topping with sauce.” Did they need to tell me that? I guess the operative word was “may.” It was unremarkable.

I’ve been occupying myself with anything I can find to keep from thinking about eating. Did I tell you that if I can’t have something, I want it? I can’t have a bacon cheeseburger….

<img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand"src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3436/3298176809_73565de1b5.jpg" width="250" height="167" alt="newestsquares" title="Thursday Thirteen #46: Cholesterol, Crochet, and Country Music" />After Share A Square was over, and we delivered those 140 afghans, I swore I wouldn’t pick up a crochet hook this summer. But, these squares were so pretty that I picked them up to make an afghan for one of the kids who were too sick to attend Camp Sanguinity Cancer Camp.

Thanks to Marcia, I’m able to resize my vacation photos! When I whined about not being able to re-size on my Mac, she sent me a link to the Rapido Re-sizer! It works like a charm. Thank you, Marcia, darlin’.

While I’m thanking people, let me send an ENORMOUS thank you to Damien of Postcards from The Funny Farm. I was having no luck at all in upgrading my WordPress blogs. I had followed the instructions that worked perfectly last time, but they wouldn’t upgrade. Damien told me something different to try, and Voila! Thanks for coming to my rescue, Buddy!

I’ve been needing some exercise, but my ankles are aching after driving/riding in a car for more than 7,000 miles in the last month. Walking in this Texas heat is just about out of the question. I can’t jump on my mini-trampoline, because the action hurts those ankles. So, I’ve been dancing. My husband and I had taken dancing lessons…and the music was Country Western, because that’s what our friends like. I’m not a fan of most country music. Gasp! I know. It’s durned near a sacrilege for a Texan to say that. I shall be burned at the stake as a heretic! I noticed that Michelle at Scribbit isn’t a fan, either. She listed several songs she liked, and her taste is very good! But, I’d add a few. Actually, I could add hundreds but I’ll save that for another time.

Often I listen to quiet ballads from “Austin Pickers” like Guy Clark or the late, great Townes Van Zandt. Here he is singing “If I Needed You.”:

But, then there are some country boys who can sing ballads and they know how to rock. Joe Ely in concert is electric. His fans all throw their hands high in the air and mimic the action of playing a keyboard to get him to play “Fingernails.”

Then there is the music that we dance to: Brooks and Dunn playing “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Tell me that doesn’t make your feet tap!

You can tell me your favorite music, or you can tell me a cure for high cholesterol, or just say “Hey.” If you leave a comment, you will be magically linked at the bottom of the page. I don’t use Mr. Linky. I hope yours is a good day!

It’s Thursday Thirteen time, and I want y’all to be the first to know:

I HAVE A NEW BABY!

Well, not really a baby. In fact, it’s only a camera. A Canon Rebel XLI. I had to have it finally. And, I have the same problem with it that I have with new babies: I’m afraid to hold it!

You won’t see any pictures from it for a few days, because I have to read the instruction manual (I have too much testosterone; I don’t read instruction manuals). I also have to figure out the software that came with it.

I’m kicking myself! For a whole year, I could have used a decent camera, as I snapped pictures of the lovely afghan squares and afghans for Share A Square. When we delivered the afghans, it would have been magnificent to have the equipment to capture the moments. My husband snapped the pictures, and did a fine job with the camera we had, but it has its limitations. If you want to see more pictures of that afghan delivery, leave a comment or “friend” me on Flickr. We have to keep them “private” to protect the children. I can’t show you faces on a public blog.

Comparing my pictures of camp to Sherry’s made me have terrible camera envy (heck all of Sherry’s pictures make me envious). If you want to see the pictures she took at camp, contact her. Hers are private, too.

I visit SusieJ and marvel at the pictures she has taken. I drool over what Janeywan does (of course, she has Colorado to photograph…I bet even my old camera could take something decent). Robin’s pictures are amazing (but she has adorable children to “shoot”). Leanne always turns me green with envy. So, I had to get me a camera.

Now, that doesn’t mean I will instantly be a good photographer. In fact, I’ll be anything but! The women above actually have skill. I’m going to try, though. My husband has a good eye for composition, and I’m hoping he can help!

Robin suggested an on-line photography course that is going on right now at Confessions from the Rubber Room. I’m going to give it a whirl.

I already see a tiny problem: I went into the field behind our house last night hoping to snap a picture of Coyote (he never comes around if I have a camera). I realized I can’t see through the lens or see the dials on the camera without my glasses. But, with my glasses on, I can’t see that I am standing on a mound of fire ants! Ouch! Photography can be dangerous!

We are going on a vacation next week to visit family in South Carolina and will go over to Charleston and down to Savannah. It should be a good opportunity to get familiar with that camera and how it works.

While we are in Savannah, we plan to take a ghost tour, so maybe I can snap pictures of “orbs!”

Definitely, I want pictures in Bonaventure Cemetery! It played a featured role in the movie “Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil.”

I also plan to chronicle our attempts at de-cluttering the house. Did I mention that two pack rats are trying to downsize? I’m blogging the adventure at another space called “Out Of Chaos.” {oops…I just added all the posts back to this blog}It tells you that I am “Clawing my way to a simple life, dragging my husband kicking and screaming every inch of the way!” I am indeed, and it may not be a pretty picture! Ignore the post that is up. I’m trying to claim the blog on Technorati. As usual, Technorati is cantankerous, and has very little tech support.

That camera may come in handy someday if we ever have grand babies. In the meantime, I can use it to take pictures of my cats! I can snap pictures one after the other with it. It’s difficult to capture cats on camera, because mine won’t sit still. They don’t pose. What? You don’t want to see picture of my cats?

Well, anyway, you can tell I’m excited. I hope I don’t make a fool of myself.

Wait…I’ve already done that, haven’t I?!

Go out and have a good day!

I’ve been thinking about “luck” after finding a hand-written note to myself. I’ve been cleaning out some of the papers I’ve saved and found a paper from 1996! Do y’all think it was time for me to clean out my files?

For some reason, I had written these superstitions about luck down with my left-handed writing. I was left handed when I was little, and my parents were always taking crayons out of my left hand and putting them in my right. The night before my sixth birthday, I had some bad luck. I fell and broke my left arm. After that, my parents were finally able to break me of the habit. But, I can write with my left hand, and I practice sometimes.

Maybe I was just practicing handwriting, maybe they were fortune cookies, perhaps I was just copying from a book. I don’t remember, because I’ve slept since then. I can’t believe I wanted to save them. But, I guess it was lucky for me that I did, because there were Thirteen Superstitions I could share with you! :

“Sneezing to the left is bad luck, but sneeze to the right and good fortune will come.”

Crud! That’s my problem – I’m a left-handed sneezer!

“Sweeping dust out the front door sweeps your good fortune away.”

Oh, maaan! What happens if you throw it in the trash can? Where are you supposed to put it?

“It’s bad luck to cut off both ends of a loaf of bread.”

Whew…good thing there is sliced bread these days. Noooooo! Both ends are sliced! I can’t win for losing.

“Cut your fingernails on Friday to avoid having a toothache during the month.”

Does that mean I don’t have to brush, or floss, or see my dentist regularly?

“It’s bad luck to lean a broom on the bed.”

Well, I’m in luck there because the bedroom is carpeted. What does it mean if you lean a vacuum cleaner on the bed?

“If your left hand itches, don’t scratch it and money will come to you.”

The word “itch” for me is like the word “yawn.” If I read, say, or think the word then I experience it. My left hand is itching now, and I bet I scratch it before I finish writing. However, my right hand is itching, too! Does that mean that the money that comes to my left hand leaves by my right? Well, of course it does.	And, my scalp and my back itches. What does it mean?

“Drop a spoon and you will have visitors soon.”

I hope they don’t mind that I didn’t sweep out the dust.

“When setting the table for a meal with friends, put the salt shaker down first to preserve your friendship for life.”

Of course, if your friends eat the salt, it might spike their blood pressure and cause them to stroke out at the table. It might be a short life…but you’ll be friends when they go.

“It’s good luck to bring sweets to a friend on the New Year.”

It’s also a great way to get rid of your leftover Halloween candy.

“If your favorite baseball team is losing a game, wearing a baseball cap backward will change their luck.”

Wait a minute! What if you were wearing the cap backward in the first place? If you aren’t wearing a cap, does that mean you don’t have to watch baseball? I’d rather watch the clothes tumble in the dryer down at the laundromat.

“Sleeping with your head at the foot of the bed will bring sorrow on your house.”

Indeed it will! If my husband got a whiff of my stinky feet, he might trade me in on a newer model. Come to think of it, his feet don’t smell like petunias.

“Picking the first violets of spring is good luck.”

Except, you don’t want to do that at my house. I have some lovely violets, but to get to them you have to crawl through poison ivy. But, then your hands would itch, and you’d get money! And, you could give it to your doctor for a cortisone shot.

“A ladybug landing on you will carry off all of your troubles when it flies away.”

Poor ladybug! It would break it’s back trying to carry off troubles around here! But, I think I’ll go sit in the garden and hope she comes along. I’ll be sure not to sit near the poison ivy.

Yes, folks. I saved that drivel for twelve years just so I could share it with you today. Aren’t you the lucky ones? I have three more file drawers filled with information just as useless.

Now that you’ve been enlightened, you can leave me your favorite superstition. Do you have one? I promise I’ll write it down and save it for twelve years.

Y’all have a great day. I hope it’s lucky!
