My Neck Of The Woods

I love to ponder the beauty of my home state. I live in Texas, if you haven’t figured that out. Perhaps it’s not immediately noticeable, because I don’t write with a Texas twang, but I’m a fifth-generation Texan. And, I’m darned proud of it.
All across the Lone Star State, there are interesting sites to see. However, I noticed one day that folks from other areas have misconceptions about not only my neck of the woods, but the people who live here. I’m betting that wherever you might live, you know that feeling!
People who have never been here think that we are a bunch of ill-bred cowboys or cowgirls. From the pictures in magazines, one would think that Texas is just bluebonnets and long-horned steers. While I admit that we have an abundance of bluebonnets in the spring … long-horned steers are in short supply.
Visitors to Texas only know to go to the Alamo or Six Flags. I want you to see some of the hidden jewels in the small towns of Texas — the places the guidebooks don’t mention!
Although I post about Texas very frequently, I decided to dedicate my Saturday posts (most of the time) to “My Neck Of The Woods.” Now, y’all my neck of the woods is pretty big, because I consider that it encompasses all of The Lone Star State! Each Saturday, I will post about something in my area, or in my state, that a tourist passing through here might not know to find. Maybe I can send you to some of my state’s hidden treasures.
Below is a map of the regions of Texas. I started posting about Texas before I had it, so I’m trying to go through those posts right now and add tags. If you would like, you can see all the posts I’ve done for that region (at least the ones I’ve managed to “tag”) in the links below the map.
The Regions of Texas
- Big Bend Country
- Gulf Coast
- Hill Country
- Panhandle Plains
- Piney Woods
- Prairies and Lakes
- South Texas Plains
I invite y’all to join me in that (wherever you may live). As bloggers, we are in a unique position to get our opinions out on the internet for all the world to see. I think it would be fantastic to have a whole list of resources from around the country (or for that matter, the world!). If we post, we could add links to other bloggers who are posting about their own home towns. Soon, nobody will need those guide books, because they will have us!
Three things I’ll ask of you, if you decide to post:
- Talk about something that you have visited, so you can give a first-hand review of it for the readers. A favorite local restaurant, a unique store, a festival, a small town museums, a local bed and breakfast inn, family friendly parks, hiking trails, and anything else you think qualifies as something that would interest you as a traveler, and hope it might interest someone else.
- If you would like, title it “My Neck Of The Woods [+ the name of the attraction or the town],” but definitely tag it with “travel,” “my neck of the woods” and your state, so people could track them all on the internet.
- Come back to my own posting for that Saturday to share a link to your post.
You can find most of my postings about Texas by clicking on My Neck Of The Woods page of my archives. Be forewarned: I write heavily about places to eat! I love those tiny cafes in small towns. I probably won’t tell you about Six Flags, but I hope I’ll tell you something that interests you.
Thanks for stopping by to visit.

I was sent over with a recommendation from Batmo at “Life’s Journeys” She told me to take a look at the Friday thing and that sounds pretty cool, but I like this Saturday Neck o’ the woods theme as well. Nice job. I’ll be back and link you up at my place.
Thanks Batty Mo, Thanks Shelly.
I’ve got some nice pictures up of Northwest Trek since we took Lani out as she hadn’t seen it before. I’m sure Texas has all of these critters somewhere in the state but getting them all together in one 700 acre plot makes for easier visitation.
If I ever move to Texas I want it on a permanent body of water of some sort either river or ocean and trees: Must have trees. It looks as if that makes it Coast or Piney Woods.
