Warm Your Heart

11:52 am October 2007 Updates

Y’all, any day that you think there is too much evil in the world, I want you to think about this Share A Square Project. We are working together to make 140 afghans for the children at Camp Sanguinity. It’s a summer camp for children with cancer. You would not believe the response.

Volunteers from all over the place are giving their time to crochet squares for this project, and it is a beautiful thing to experience. I’ve gotten squares from all over the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii). Squares have been sent from Saskatchewan, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. People in Spain, Sweden, Scotland, England, Australia, and Taiwan have sent squares to share. I know I’ve missed naming some of the places. Now, thanks to Chimu, there may be squares from Japan.

A woman who cannot see crocheted some lovely squares for us. A woman battling cancer herself has made more squares (and rimmed more squares) than anybody including me! One woman, though she has Alzheimer’s Disease and cannot remember how to make a granny square, made squares of single crochet for the project. Though expecting her first baby, a woman gave time to make squares for this project. Another woman is putting together an afghan, though she suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. A woman who has had a stroke is putting together afghans left and right. I’ve now been contacted by a woman who says she “must” put together an afghan, because she lost her own child to cancer.

Does that warm your heart? It does mine. If you have not gotten involved, but would like to do so, please visit the FAQ page. If you don’t crochet or knit, there are other ways to help. Most importantly, you can tell people about it. If you want to see updates for September, click on the icon at the top right hand side of the sidebar.

A Texas sized Thank you to everyone who has participated. Every square you send makes a difference. Below are a few of the lovely squares that have come this week. You can see some of the finished product here.

These came in the mail from Gwen in Texas. Thank you Gwen.

Nora L, from NY crocheted these while she was on a trip to England and Ireland. I hope she got to enjoy some of her trip. Nora, thanks so much.

My dear friend Teamouse, in Saskatchewan Canada, sent along these squares and this afghan made by the women at her church! Teamouse was the first to support this project, and I couldn’t have started it without her. Thank you Sweet Tea.
