It’s In The Bag. The Debbie Meyer Green Bag.

There are some people who can shop for hours for clothing. Other people fall for books, or shoes, or music. I’m much more easily entertained. Put me in the produce section of the grocery store, and I go hog wild! I want to buy every vegetable I see (well, except for Brussels sprouts).

I love to serve fresh fruits and vegetables at mealtime, and really despise opening cans. Have y’all ever tasted asparagus from a can? That slimy stuff is just about as nasty as food can get! No wonder so many people don’t like to eat their vegetables! Fresh asparagus however, is delicious … but it’s hard to make it last very long in the refrigerator.

In fact, most vegetables need to be used quickly or the next thing you know you will open the vegetable bin to see some hairy, unidentifiable entity staring back at you. I don’t know how many times I have re-invented penicillin!

That’s because I got my shopping habits from my mother. She didn’t like to go to the grocery store, therefore she shopped only one time each month and bought everything she would need to feed her four kids. When I got grown, I did that, too.

However, I forgot that Momma primarily cooked vegetables in cans. If I buy a months worth of fresh produce (for two people) … it’s going to deteriorate before I can use it. Since these days one almost has to take out a loan to afford produce, I’ve discovered that my shopping habits have had to change.

I still serve fresh vegetables, but I don’t buy as many at a time. I go to the grocery store more often (to hit the weekly sales). When I get my produce home, instead of just stuffing it in the refrigerator, I protect it all using Debbie Meyer Green Bags.

I almost feel silly telling you about them, because I first heard of them on one of those cheesy television commercials that tell you, “This is not available in stores. Call and order yours today!” I have never bought anything from an ad like that. I’m a snob that way.

But, one day I saw these at my local Walgreen’s Pharmacy (they are too available in stores!) and I talked myself into buying them. I have not regretted that decision.

After using them for several months now, I swear by them. Well, OK, I often swear next to anything (I’m not very ladylike sometimes) … but I’m telling you these bags are worth the price!

All you do is make sure that your produce is dry, pop it in a bag (using a different bag for each type of produce), and fold over the top of the bag. If you notice moisture forming in the bag, just wipe it out with a dry towel. Though they cost about $1.00 a bag, each bag can be rinsed, dried, and re-used up to ten times.

I don’t understand the science of it, but supposedly most fruits and vegetables release ethylene gases when they ripen, which cause them to age and deteriorate. The package says that these green bags “absorb and remove” the ethylene gases. All I can tell you is that they work! The only “hairy entities” in my refrigerator are the okra and the kiwi fruit (and they are supposed to have hair).

I like this product so well that I’m giving it five cowboy boots … so you know it seriously “kicks you-know-what.”

OMG I bought these too. They are awesome! Ever consider keeping romaine for 2 weeks? Celery for a month? Not kidding. I use the green bags for veg. and there is a version for bread too. I like to shop once a week and some things do not get used up but will go bad in regular storage bags or bins if you keep them longer. Like celery. These are seriously worth it (I do however question the “10 times” thing. Really? How are you going to keep track? How do you know which bags have been washed and how many times? And what happens after 10 times? Do they turn into pumpkins? All interesting questions).

I’ve had my green bags since Thanksgiving, used them and reused them, and washed and re-washed them and they are still going strong.

Finally. A product that does what they say it will!

Romaine doesn’t stay around that long around here, but celery does. I don’t snack on it if I have Doritos  . I really like ‘em for green onions, because I’m always too lazy to chop them when I bring them in from the store. And the asparagus. My husband won’t eat much of it at a time.

Yeah, and I don’t know how to tell how many times I’ve washed them either. And, I wish they would change color or something when they don’t work anymore.

If wishes were horse…you know what I would be shoveling.
